Kansas City Royals fans have mixed feelings about Dayton Moore being fired by the team
Royals CEO and chairman John Sherman announced Wednesday that president of baseball operations Dayton Moore had been dismissed from the franchise.
“Dayton agrees this is an appropriate time for change,” Sherman said during a news conference at Kauffman Stadium.
He added: “There’s a gap right now between where we are and where we expected to be.”
General manager J.J. Picollo will assume Moore’s duties, Sherman said.
Moore had been with the Royals since 2006, and the team made a pair of World Series appearances during his tenure, winning the championship in 2015. But the franchise has not had a winning season since that year.
Fans shared their thoughts about Moore’s departure on social media. Some were thrilled by the news. Others were grateful for Moore’s hand in helping the Royals win a World Series title — or a mix of both. A few were a little sad.
Here is a look at what they were saying on Twitter and Reddit.
It’s a good day to be a Royals fan

Dayton Moore is a class act. Tremendous leader & I will always be appreciative for what he has done for the Royals. Him showing up to this presser was just so classy. He will be missed. Thank You Dayton. #TogetherRoyal

You can’t follow @Royals as closely as I have the last 5 years and be the least bit surprised this happened. This is a super frustrating team to follow, and it was obvious change was needed.

I'm not going to pretend like I'm not glad Dayton Moore is no longer with the Royals. But it is a bit sad that it's come to this for the person who built the organisation up from basically nothing to a World Series on a shoestring budget. #TogetherRoyal

A fan on Reddit wrote: “Thank you for the championship but it was time! John Sherman showing the fans he isn’t content with losing! Let’s go boys!!! Matheny and Eldred next maybe? Who do we get in his place?”

Thank you Dayton Moore for everything you did for the @Royals. Some of the best memories of my life were watching you guys bring a world title to KC. It meant a lot to me. Thanks dude, you’re a real one. #ForeverRoyal

Long overdue. He’d been coasting off 2014-15 for far too long. He was terrible before and after building their World Series winner. #TogetherRoyal #DaytonMoore https://t.co/LUKZeCdVrI

Dayton Moore being gone is a sign of good things to come but that cannot be all that occurs I’m hopeful Matheny and Eldred are gone soon after. Truly clean house.

“We OK with JJ taking over fully? Seems logical to me but curious to hear what others think,” a fan wrote on Reddit.
Another posted: “While I’ll always be appreciative for the championships, it’s been time for Moore to get relieved. Hopefully Matheny and Eldred are next”
You’re going to see a lot of Twitter GMs (clowns) celebrating Moore’s dismissal. I’m not going to do that. Was it time? Yes. Is it OK to acknowledge that Dayton Moore helped take the #royals from an embarrassment to a championship? Absolutely. Thank you and good luck, GMDM.

Thank you for finally being a competent organization!

Thank you Dayton Moore for the ring and bringing championship baseball back to the Royals. I get the move by ownership but still sad to see GMDM go Banners fly forever Pressure is on Sherman more than ever to get things right This move is pointless if $ isn’t spent this winter pic.twitter.com/zI8gpN63a2

A fan posted on Reddit: “There it is. End of an era. Moore was always religious, but when he started letting evangelical Christianity affect his evaluations of players and coaches (See: Eldred, Matheny), the project was headed south. I’ve always given DM more credit than most for his World Series win. Catching lightning in a bottle as a small market doesn’t happen using conventional tactics, but It was time.”
Another wrote: “I dont like to celebrate people losing jobs, but I am soooo happy this man is not running the show anymore.”
Thank you for two of my favorite October’s of my life Dayton Moore! #ForeverRoyal

While we won a World Series under his reign, his firing was long overdue. The true rebuild begins here.

It is a sad day to see him go, but nothing lasts forever and there’s a time that comes when change is needed and today is that day. Thank you Dayton for making baseball fun again in KC and bringing a championship back to us. Forever grateful! https://t.co/qsK1a8JgVy
