Police investigate homicide after shooting victim found in car at Kansas City apartments

One person was found fatally shot on Tuesday evening inside a vehicle in the Stonegate Meadows apartment complex in Kansas City’s Riss Lake neighborhood on the East Side, according to police.

Police officers were first dispatched around 6:10 p.m. to reports of the sound of gunfire in the 10000 block of East 42nd Street, said Capt. Leslie Foreman, a spokeswoman for KCPD. As the officers were responding, Foreman said, more detailed information was provided alerting them to a shooting victim roughly three blocks east.

Inside a vehicle parked in one of the lots at the sprawling apartment complex, the officers found a gunshot victim, identified as an adult male, and immediately started first aid, Foreman said. Emergency medical personnel arrived and took him by ambulance to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

On Tuesday night at the shooting scene, Foreman said KCPD was in the early stages of the investigation and there was little information to share. She encouraged anyone who may have noticed anything unusual or suspicious to pass that knowledge on to detectives.

”We do want to reassure people: We are out here, we are investigating. This is what our detectives are trained for, our crime-scene folks are trained for. The big piece ... that we really continue to ask for is (the) public’s help,” Foreman said, adding: “We can do everything we can do, but it’s so much better for a case and so helpful when people come forward.”

Detectives were canvassing the area for possible witnesses Tuesday night. Crime-scene investigators and police officers combed through the crime scene, placing evidence markers on the street and sidewalk and taking photographs of a dark gray sedan in the apartment parking lot where the gunshot victim was found.

Police had no suspect information as of Tuesday night.

The killing marks the fifth in Kansas City in the first month of 2023, according to data maintained by The Star. Last year, the city saw a total of 171 homicides, marking the second deadliest year in its history.

Kansas City police were asking anyone with information about the fatal shooting to call homicide detectives at 816-234-5043 or the anonymous TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
