Kansas City Chiefs vs. Miami Dolphins: Commentary from NFL playoff game in KC

Kirby Lee/USA TODAY Sports

It’s playoff time in Kansas City, and the Chiefs are moving on.

It was certainly playoff weather — and then some — at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium, with Kansas City temperatures dipping below minus-5 as the Chiefs and Dolphins met on Saturday night.

The Kansas City Chiefs certainly seemed to handle the elements better than their Miami counterpart, earning a 26-7 victory that was just about flawless, save for one Tyreek Hill deep ball in the first half.

There was plenty of intrigue entering Saturday’s game, especially considering how these teams had ended the regular season. The Chiefs were in the race for the AFC’s No. 1 seed until late. The Dolphins, meanwhile, collapsed down the stretch and lost out on hosting a playoff game.

The Dolphins, 9-3 after defeating the Commanders on Dec. 3, dropped three of five to close the regular season. And that’s how they found themselves in subzero temperatures at Arrowhead. (Today’s high in Miami was 83 degrees, by the way.)

So what went right for the Chiefs? A lot ... from the play of the defense to the efficiency of Patrick Mahomes and the offense ... to even the kicking game, featuring four made field goals from Harrison Butker.

Rashee Rice erupted for 130 yards and a score in his playoff debut, and Isiah Pacheco, Clyde Edwards-Helaire and others punished the Dolphins’ defenders by running through tackle attempts in the cold.
