Kansas City Chiefs at Buffalo Bills: Commentary from Divisional Round playoff game

Jay Biggerstaff/USA TODAY Sports

The Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs has come and gone. And for the first time in his playoff career, Patrick Mahomes wasn’t playing at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

The result? Another iconic win, this time in the villain role, for one of the best quarterbacks in NFL history.

Patrick Mahomes, aided by a much-improved second-half defense, led the Kansas City Chiefs to their sixth consecutive trip to the AFC Championship Game, defeating the Buffalo Bills 27-24 at Highmark Stadium.

That sets up a date with the top-seeded Baltimore Ravens, who beat the Houston Texans on Saturday. And it’ll be another road playoff contest for Mahomes.

First things first: The Chiefs had to figure out a Bills team that defeated them earlier in the regular season (albeit with a controversial finish) and dominated on the ground throughout the first half.

The tide began to turn when Mahomes and the offense rekindled some of their magic — similar to the late stages of the famed “13 seconds” game in January of 2022 — and caught fire in the second half.

The defense, meanwhile, came up with multiple big stands and even held the Bills to a field-goal attempt on their final drive. The kick missed, and that was that.

Mahomes and Travis Kelce (two touchdowns) each played a big role, as did Isiah Pacheco, who helped run out the clock.

KC is now 60 minutes from Super Bowl LVIII. Relive our commentary from Sunday’s classic below...
