Kamiakin soccer opens state 4A tournament + Games set for WA state football matchups

The Kamiakin girls soccer team was the only Mid-Columbia Conference team to qualify for the state tournament coming out of the District 8 tournament.

The Braves (15-3) beat Lewis & Clark 3-2 last Thursday to earn the District’s top 4A seed, while LC gets the No. 2 berth.

Gonzaga Prep grabbed the third and final state berth for 4A when the Bullpups edged Richland 2-1 on Saturday, ending the Bombers’ season.

Kamiakin earned a 3 seed on Sunday from the state seeding committee, and the Braves will play host to No. 14 Rogers of Puyallup (14-3-3) at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday at Lampson Stadium for the first round.

Top seed Southridge lost 1-0 to No. 2-seeded Mead on Saturday in a winner-to-state, loser-out game in the 3A District 8 tournament.

Meanwhile, Kiona-Benton (16-2) and Connell (11-8-2) both qualified for the 1A state tournament.

Ki-Be lost to LaSalle 2-1 in the district tournament on Saturday, while Connell eliminated Wahluke 2-1 for a state berth.

Ki-Be earned a No. 15 seed and will play No. 2 Seattle Academy at Sammamish High School at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

Connell will be ranked 16th, and will play top seed Klahowya at its field at 5 p.m. Tuesday in a 1A state tournament first-round match.

4A: Rogers-Puyallup at Kamiakin, Lampson Stadium, 5:30 p.m.

1A: Kiona-Benton vs. Seattle Academy, Sammamish High School, 5 p.m.

Prep football

What an outstanding game Friday night by Liberty Christian senior Keegan Bishop.

The Patriots won a very close and low-scoring 1B game against DeSales of Walla Walla by a 14-8 score.

That means LC finished the season 8-0 in Southeast 1B play, and 9-0 overall.

Bishop, the Patriots quarterback, rushed 29 times for 102 yards rushing. He also passed for 112 yards and a touchdown. On defense, Bishop had an interception.

Teammate Drew Ott caught 4 passes for 89 yards.

The Patriots will have a bye this weekend in the 1B state playoffs because of their being seeded No. 3 in the tournament.

They’ll await the winner of No. 11 Quilcene against No. 6 DeSales, which is set for 3 p.m. Friday.

Prep volleyball

The small schools get the spotlight this week in Yakima with the 1A, 2B and 1B state tournaments going on in the Yakima Valley SunDome.

The 1A tournament begins Friday and ends Saturday.

Connell is an 11-seed and will open play against No. 6 Cascade Christian at 1:30 p.m. Friday.

Meanwhile, College Place is in as a No. 8 seed. The Hawks will open against No. 9 seed Nooksack Valley at 5:15 p.m. Friday.

The 2B tournament is a Thursday-Friday event and our region has two teams involved.

No. 12 seed Tri-Cities Prep will open tournament play against No. 5 Adna at 9:45 a.m. Thursday.

No. 15 Walla Walla Valley Academy will take on No. 2 Manson, also at 9:45 a.m. Thursday.

Finally, the 1B tournament is also a Thursday-Friday event, and Liberty Christian of Richland is seeded No. 5. The Patriots will open against No. 12 Odessa at 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

The District 8 4A tournament is still going on this week, but Richland and Gonzaga Prep has already qualified for the state tournament.

Richland swept Kamiakin 3-0 last Saturday for one state berth, while Prep beat Chiawana 3-1 for another.

There is one state berth remaining.

On Tuesday night, Lewis & Clark visits Chiawana in a loser-out game, while Hanford does the same at Kamiakin. Both matches are at 6 p.m.

Winners will meet at 1 p.m. Saturday, at the higher seed, for the remaining state berth.

The state tournament is next week in Yakima.

Women’s soccer

The University of Montevallo in Alabama have a 12-3-3 record this fall, and two Mid-Columbia athletes have been starting for the Falcons.

Senior midfielder Kaeri Ward (Kamiakin) is No. 3 on the team in goals scored with 4. She’s also No. 3 on the team in scored points with 9.

Meanwhile, junior defender Avery Campbell (Hanford) leads the team in minutes played with 1,574. She’s also tops in assists, with 5.

The Falcons were ousted in the first round of the Gulf South tournament last week. However, the squad is expecting a berth in the NCAA Division 2 post-season tournament when they are announced on Nov. 11.

Warner Pacific University’s women’s soccer team finished the season with a 6-9-3 record, with three local athletes on the team: senior defenders Briseyda Avila-Rojas (Irrigon) and Brianna Beuck (Walla Walla), and freshman forward Jackie Castellanos (Chiawana).

Castellanos led the team in scoring with 9 points (3 goals and 3 assists).

Beuck was No. 2 on the team in minutes played with 1,435.
