Justin Timberlake's new album is on the way: Here's everything we know about it

This much is clear: Justin Timberlake is about to release new music.

The Memphis-area-bred pop star has been teasing a new album — his sixth LP and first since 2018’s "Man of the Woods" — over the last few weeks, and it appears that the official rollout of the LP is near.

Following a special intimate Memphis concert on Friday and ahead of a string of upcoming TV appearances, an announcement of a new disc from Timberlake is expected soon, possibly as early as this week.

Here’s what we know so far about Timberlake's new music.

After weeks of teasing and speculation, the semi-official announcement of Timberlake’s new album — suspected to be titled “Everything I Thought It Was” — came during his free one-night-only concert at the Orpheum in Memphis on Friday.

The show was the most high-profile strike yet in an intentionally mysterious campaign of tweets, Instagram posts and videos intended to stoke anticipation for new work by the star, whose hits include the 2006 chart-topper "SexyBack" and "Can't Stop the Feeling!," from the 2016 animated film, "Trolls."

The Memphis concert offered both a confirmation and a sampling of Timberlake’s latest work. During his set, Timberlake previewed two new songs. The singer and his backup band performed the forthcoming album’s first single, "Selfish." The DJ also played a recording of another new track, "No Angels."

Justin Timberlake's new song 'Selfish'

On Monday, Timberlake posted on social media that his new single, "Selfish," would be available on all streaming platforms Thursday, Jan. 25.

The midtempo ballad features Timberlake crooning such lines as: "If I get jealous/ I can't help it/ I want every bit of you/ Guess I'm selfish."

Justin Timberlake: 'Everything I Thought It Was' / 'EITIW'

There has been no official confirmation on the new album's title, although all signs point to "Everything I Thought It Was."

Following the Memphis show, Timberlake posted an album trailer on Instagram and YouTube, with a 30-second clip narrated by actor Benicio Del Toro, and owing its visual aesthetic to Wes Anderson’s recent film, “Asteroid City.”

The video teased: "Justin Timberlake Presents: 'EVERYTHING I THOUGHT IT WAS' Preface by Benicio Del Toro."

Some T-shirts on sale at the merchandise booths at Friday's show in Memphis featured the legend: "EITIW - Everything I Thought It Was." The Orpheum's marquee during Friday's show simply read "NO VACANCY," in the "EITIW" analog-computer font.

Justin Timberlake on 'The Tonight Show' and 'Saturday Night Live'

On Thursday, Jan. 25, Timberlake is set to appear on NBC’s “The Tonight Show.” The program is hosted by his close pal Jimmy Fallon, who inducted Timberlake in the Memphis Music Hall of Fame in 2015.

The expectation is Timberlake may use the appearance to officially kick off his campaign for the new record.

Also, this weekend, Timberlake will appear on NBC’s "Saturday Night Live," serving as the musical guest. Actress Dakota Johnson will host.

Is Justin Timberlake going on tour?

It’s not clear if the announcement of a new record will immediately be accompanied by plans for a support tour. But it is likely that Timberlake — who recently filed a series of “Everything I Thought It Was”-related trademarks — has bigger plans beyond just the LP.

Timberlake supported his last record, “Man of the Woods,” with a year-long tour between 2018 and 2019, that included 115 shows throughout the world which grossed over $226 million.
