A missing juvenile justice official was found dead more than a week after he went missing, Georgia police and local outlets report.

The search for Deputy Commissioner Victor Roberts ended Tuesday, Dec. 13, after his body was found inside his SUV nearly 50 miles from his Marietta home, according to WAGA and WXIA.

Roberts was last seen by his wife before leaving for work at the Department of Juvenile Justice on Dec. 5 but never arrived, WXIA reported. Juvenile Justice Commissioner Tyrone Oliver said he was told Roberts had been struggling with memory loss, according to WSB-TV.

Department officials said they were “deeply saddened” by news of Roberts’ death.

“Deputy Commissioner Roberts was integral to our team for more than 25 years,” a statement posted on the DJJ’s Facebook page reads. “He faithfully served the Department with honor, providing leadership that helped transform the lives of countless justice-involved youth.”

A license plate reader picked up Roberts’ vehicle in Senoia later on in the day he went missing, WAGA reported. On Dec. 13, officers found him inside his SUV in nearby Peachtree City, according to WXIA.

McClatchy News reached out to Peachtree City police for comment on Dec. 14 and was awaiting a response.

A cause of death hasn’t been released. Authorities said they don’t suspect foul play, but the case remains under investigation, WSB-TV reported.

Peachtree City is about 30 miles southwest of downtown Atlanta.
