Funny enough, he originally did a clean act—no cursing. “I was very afraid of getting heckled, and for some reason I figured that if I was cursing I had a greater chance of offending someone and getting heckled,” he said.
Eventually, Burr decided to drop the clean act—and shave his head—and being himself was what made his comedy really take off. “I buzzed my head and I looked like the asshole that I was,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s when I became OK with me. All of a sudden, I started getting cooler opportunities.”
He scored his first HBO gig in 2005, launched the Monday Morning Podcast in 2007 and co-founded the All Things Comedy network and digital studio in 2012.
