How did Bill Burr get famous?

Bill Burr has been doing comedy since the 1990s, and he didn’t succeed overnight.

“I kinda fell into being a comedian by accident,” Burr told Vulture. “I wanted to do it, but I didn’t think it was possible because there wasn’t the internet, it was just on TV and that seemed like a million miles away from where I was.”

Burr moved to New York City early into his career. Hard work and time on the scene turned him into a headliner, but nowhere near the name he is now. Funny enough, he originally did a clean act—no cursing. “I was very afraid of getting heckled, and for some reason I figured that if I was cursing I had a greater chance of offending someone and getting heckled,” he said.

Eventually, Burr decided to drop the clean act—and shave his head—and being himself was what made his comedy really take off. “I buzzed my head and I looked like the asshole that I was,” he told The Hollywood Reporter. “That’s when I became OK with me. All of a sudden, I started getting cooler opportunities.”

He scored his first HBO gig in 2005, launched the Monday Morning Podcast in 2007 and co-founded the All Things Comedy network and digital studio in 2012.

If there was one moment that made Burr famous, though, it might’ve been his 12-minute improvised rant during a stand-up show that went viral in 2006. In response to loud booing from the Philadelphia crowd, Burr went on a verbal tirade against the city that, surprisingly enough, earned him standing applause when he finished.

What is Bill Burr's net worth?

Currently, Bill Burr has a net worth of around $14 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. He’s best known as a comedian and has released some very successful comedy specials, but it’s safe to say a good portion of his net worth comes from acting roles on shows like The Mandalorian.

Although he’s rich by anyone’s standards, Burr doesn’t seem overly focused on money. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, he said, “In 2011, I bought a house with money from being a stand-up. And I remember [being] on the back porch with my beautiful wife and said, ‘I know you’re not supposed to say this, but I made it. I’ve been satisfied for a long time. Anything I get after this is great.’ The most inner peace that I’ve had in my life is where I’m at right now.”

How much does Bill Burr make from touring?

Like most comedians, Burr makes some of his money from touring, doing various comedy shows at theaters across the country. With all the moving components of a tour, it’s hard to say exactly how much Burr takes in. If he were to sell out his Nov. 10, 2023 show at Madison Square Garden, which has 195,000 seats, for instance, he wouldn't see 100 percent of those ticket sales. He'd have to pay out the venue, ticketing services like Ticketmaster, a booking agent, a manager and potentially others, including the comedy festival he's performing under.

How much did Bill Burr make from his Netflix special Paper Tiger?

Paper Tiger was Bill Burr’s sixth comedy special, released in 2019, and perhaps his best-known. In true Burr style, he covered topics including outrage culture, male feminism and cultural appropriation.

Burr’s income from Paper Tiger hasn’t been reported on, but Netflix has paid lump sums of $1 million for specials like these in the past, according to The Wall Street Journal. Higher-profile comedians like Chris Rock have made much more—in Rock’s case specifically, $40 million for two comedy specials in 2016.

It’s likely that Burr made at least $1 million—quite possibly a lot more—but not as much as Rock’s $20 million-per-special rate.

How much does Bill Burr make from acting?

Burr’s acting income isn’t public information. Most of his credits have been guest roles (translation: lower-paid), though he has featured in five episodes of Breaking Bad and two of The Mandalorian. He’s also acted in his own projects, in F Is for Family and the new film Old Dads.

In total, his IMDB acting credits add up to 46. So, while he may not score big bucks for each appearance, the sheer amount of work he’s done has definitely paid handsomely and contributed to his $14 million net worth.
