July 4 events in Merced County: Where to celebrate Independence Day with fireworks, parades, more

Communities across Merced County are set to celebrate the Fourth of July in style.

Fireworks will brighten the skies and parade-goers will march the streets from Merced County’s east to west sides, with festivities planned on Saturday, Monday and Tuesday.

Firework stands are set up across the county as many high school sports teams and clubs use the sales as fundraisers.

The National Safety Council advises people to leave the fireworks to the experts. If you are going to use legal fireworks, here are some safety tips from the National Safety Council.

  • Never allow young children to handle fireworks.

  • Older children should only use fireworks under the close adult supervision.

  • Never use fireworks while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

  • Wear protective eyewear when handling or standing near fireworks.

  • Never hold lighted fireworks in your hand.

  • Never light fireworks indoors.

  • Only light one device at a time and maintain a safe distance after lighting.

  • Never light a device in a container.

  • Keep a bucket of water nearby to fully extinguish fireworks that don’t go off in case of fire.

  • Never use illegal fireworks.

The Merced County Sheriff’s Office asks anyone who witnesses the use of illegal fireworks to call their non-emergency number at 209-385-7445.

Fireworks such as mortars, roman candles, bottle rockets and firecrackers are illegal to possess in California, according to the Merced Police Department.

In Merced, citations will be issued that carry a fine of $1,000 for the first offense, $1,500 for the second offense and $2,000 for subsequent offenses.
