Mac Jones may be one of the most highly-touted quarterback prospects from the 2021 draft, but that’s not excusing him from getting the rookie treatment in New England.

During a training camp press conference on Wednesday, Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels was asked about his new QB.

Instead of gushing about Jones’ first-round talent, the coaching vet took a more comedic approach.

“He’s good at getting yelled at,” McDaniels said, per Pats insider Phil Perry.

While Jones is familiar with the Patriots’ quick-hitting, accuracy-based passing offense from his time under a similar system with Nick Saban and the Crimson Tide, he still has a ways to go before he’s fully adjusted to the professional game. Unlike some of his other first-round quarterback colleagues, it appears the No. 15 overall pick won’t land the starting job based on incoming draft status alone.

The QB battle between Jones and returning starter Cam Newton is certainly one of the most intriguing in the league, but it seems like the Pats’ coaching staff is pretty dead set on their Week 1 starter.

Over the weekend, head coach Bill Belichick emphasized what he’s been saying since draft day back in April.

“Cam’s our starting quarterback. I think I said that,” Belichick said, per New England insider Mike D’Abate of FanNation.

While Newton may be the starter Week 1, that could quickly change. If the former league MVP continues the passing struggles he faced during his first year with the team in 2020, Jones could find himself dropped into the starting job sooner than expected.

We’ll get our first look at Jones in live-game action next week when the Patriots face off against the Washington Football Team in a preseason matchup on Aug. 12.
