Missouri U.S. Sen. Josh Hawley is writing a book called “Manhood: The Masculine Virtues Americans Need,” building off a speech he gave at a conservative conference claiming the political left is waging a war on masculinity.

“The American Founders believed that a republic depends on certain masculine virtues,” the book’s description on Amazon says. “Senator Josh Hawley thinks they were right. In a bold new book, he calls on American men to stand up and embrace their God-given responsibility as husbands, fathers, and citizens.”

His office did not respond to a request for comment.

The book’s announcement comes after Hawley was mocked by the U.S. House committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol, which showed a video of him running out of the U.S. Senate chamber as lawmakers, reporters and staff were being evacuated.

“This is just an attempt to troll,” Hawley told CNN this week when asked about the video.

The video set off a round of laughter in the committee room and spawned viral memes, including the video being set to music like Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.” Hawley fundraised off of the attention by promoting a mug that features an illustration of him holding his fist to protesters who later stormed the Capitol that day.

Hawley’s focus on masculinity comes at a time where politicians have leaned into stunts displaying performative masculinity, like shooting guns and carrying blowtorches.

But Hawley has been preaching about masculinity for months, after he gave a speech in Orlando saying Democrats were calling masculinity toxic and citing shifting opinions about masculinity as the reason more women attend college than men, fewer men report being married between ages 25-34, fewer men are fathering children and that men are facing higher rates of substance abuse, anxiety and depression.

“Can we be surprised that after years of being told they are the problem, that their manhood is the problem, more and more men are withdrawing into the enclave of idleness, and pornography, and video games?” Hawley said in the speech.

The book appears to be a more in-depth version of the speech, in which Hawley will draw from Greek and Roman philosophers, Jesus and his political icon Teddy Roosevelt. He’ll focus on traits he defines as masculine — ”responsibility, bravery, fidelity and leadership.”

It is unclear how large of an advance Hawley received for the book. In his 2021 financial disclosure report, he cited two book deals with Regnery Publishing (which picked up an earlier book, “The Tyranny of Big Tech,” after Simon & Schuster dropped it after the Jan. 6 attack). He also reported $467,000 in royalties from Regnery Publishing.

Hawley’s “Manhood” goes on sale May 16, 2023. It is currently available for pre-order on Amazon for $29.99. He will be speaking at the Stronger Men’s Conference — which features things like monster trucks — a few weeks before the book goes on sale.
