Jonesville's regional champion boys 4x400 team wins conference in state tuneup

JACKSON — The Jonesville track teams brought home first place medals from their first-ever Cascades conference championship meet. The Comet boys and girls track teams each had conference champions in respective events.

As a team, the Comet boys track squad took second, behind champion Napoleon. The girls track squad took sixth. The Grass Lake Warriors won the girls conference championship.

The Jonesville boys track relay teams in the 4x400 and 4x800 continued their dominant championship season. The 4x400 team was crowned league champions after running a 3:29.48. The team still ranks No. 1 in the state after breaking their school record time at the regional finals last week. The regional championship team of Nicholas Fowler, David Fowler, Gavin Van Kampen and Carter Rounds now prep for the state finals.

The 4x800 team also won the conference first place medal. The team of Fowler, Zachery Childress, Caleb Blonde and Gavin Van Kampen took the conference crown with a time of 8:13.54.

Freshman boys distance runner Caleb Blonde added two conference titles to his regional championship from last weekend. Blonde took first in the 1,600-meter dash with a time of 4:38.28 and won the 3,200 with a time of 10:19.52.

Junior shot-put thrower Scotty Aubre just missed out on state qualification at last weekend's regional finals. The Comet came back this week and won the shot put event at the conference championship. He earned a new PR throw distance of 46-feet, 4 1/2 inches.

Girls high jumper Payton Nichelson is a conference champion. The sophomore earned a new PR jump height of 5-feet, 2 inches. Nichelson has won six total high jump events this season and now prepares for the state finals.

Jonesville had several other athletes place in the top 10 at the conference championship meet.

For the girls team, freshman Megan Lee had a new shot put PR of 33-feet, 5 inches to take second.

The 4x100 relay team of Zoey Udzik, Amelia Means, Harper James and Miley Dunlap took fourth. The 4x200 team of Udzik, Means, James and Dunlap took eighth. The 4x400 team of Means, Udzik, Nichelson and Sharp took fourth. The 4x800 all-freshman team of Keira Knight, Joleane Gulledge, Silvia Blackham and Julia Mandrelle team took sixth.

Amelia Means took 10th in the girls 300 hurdles with a time of 58.66. Keira Knight took sixth in the 3,200 with a time of 14:48.01. Joleane Gulledge took eighth in the 1,600 with a time of 6:42.58, and Julia Mandrelle took 10th with a time of 7:02.70.

Senior Brooke Sharp took second in the 200 with a new PR time of 27.23 seconds. Nichelson took sixth with a PR time of 28.29. Sharp took third in the 100 with a new PR time of 13.11.

For the boys team, Zander Goodwin took seventh in long jump with a distance of 18-feet, 8 inches. Makinlee Packer took fourth in pole vault with a jump of 11-feet, 6 inches. Teammate Skyler Cooper took seventh with a clearance of 10-feet, a new PR. In high jump, Reece Rundquist took fourth with a jump of 5-feet, 9 inches. Cody Houle took 10th with a jump of 5-feet, 5 inches.

In shot put, senior Isaac Shively took 10th with a throw of 39-feet, 6 1/2 inches. Shively took 10th in discus with a distance of 105-feet, 8 inches.

The 4x100 team of Ryan Marcavage, Nicholas Fowler, Makinlee Packer and Jordon VanSickle took sixth. The 4x200 team of Nicholas Fowler, Jordon VanSickle, Makinlee Packer and Carter Rounds took fourth.

In the 300 hurdles, Goodwin took third with a time of 43.90. Nathan More had a PR of 45.16 to take sixth. More took seventh in the 110 hurdles with a time of 18.29.

Freshman Collin Fucile took third in the 3,200 with a time of 10:38.12. Senior Gavin Van Kampen took second in the 1,600 with a time of 4:41.41. Senior Jacob Norman had a new PR time of 4:59.26.

Van Kampen took second in the 800 with a time of 2:03.17. Senior David Fowler took fifth with a time of 2:08.81.

In the 400, Nicholas Fowler took second with a time of 52.16. Senior Carter Rounds took third in the 200-meter dash with a time of 23.75.
