Jonesville boys track seals up the Cascades West with win over Hanover-Horton

JONESVILLE — The Jonesville track and field teams faced off against Hanover-Horton in their final Cascades West showdown, and the meet sealed up an important milestone for the Jonesville boys track team.

The Jonesville track and field boys team beat Hanover-Horton in a final score of 86-51 to remain unbeaten in their conference. With the win, they finish as champions of the Cascades West and enter the conference meet, taking place in two weeks, with maximum points earned in the regular season.

Earning wins for the Comets was Nick Fowler. Fowler, ranked 25th in current Division 3 400 standings, won the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.01 seconds.

Senior Gavin Van Kampen won the 800 with a 2:04.25. Van Kampen tracks at seventh in Division 3 state rankings for current 800-meter times.

Jonesville distance runner Caleb Blonde took the 1,600 and 3,200 runs. He won the first with a new PR time of 4:37.70 and won the 3,200 with a time of 10:19.73. The freshman, who will be a key distance runner for the Comets for the foreseeable future, ranks 23rd in the 1,600 standings and 32nd in the 3,200 standings.

Junior Nathan More won the 300 hurdles with a new personal best time of 45.18 seconds.

Over in the field events, Scotty Aube won shot put with a throw of 42-feet, 7 1/2 inches. Junior teammate Cooper Stevens, who took second in shot put, took first in discus with a throw of 119-feet, 3 inches.

Junior Makinlee Packer won the pole vault event with a 11-0 clearance height. The Jonesville relay teams nearly swept the competition, winning the 4x100, 4x400 and 4x800. The 4x400 team of Nicholas Fowler, David Fowler, Gavin Van Kampen and Carter Rounds are ranked second in the current Division 3 standings for the event, just a few seconds shy of the team from Clare.

The 4x800 team of David Fowler, Zachery Childress, Caleb Blonde and Gavin Van Kampen are ranked second in the Division 3 standings, as well. Their 8:13.99 finish against Hanover-Horton is their best time so far this season.

Middle School Relay Success

The Jonesville boys track relay success of recent looks to be paying off at the lower levels, too. The Comet middle school 4x200 boys relay team of Logan Stanton, Cole Graves, Bryce Henry and Charlie Spencer are currently ranked 15th in the entire state standings for middle school track. The team's 1:41.30. mark is just one of two numbers that broke the Jonesville middle school's relay record for that event.

Varsity Girls Results

The Jonesville girls team fell short in the final team scoring, losing 81-52. However, several athletes put in impressive efforts to win their events.

Senior Brooke Sharp has already picked up five wins in 400-meter dashes this season, but the Comet picked up her second win of the year in the 200 with a new PR time of 27.61 seconds. The senior also grabbed her first 100-meter dash win of the season with a season-best time of 13.42. Sharp ranks in the top 30 Division 3 400-meter dash runners.

Two freshmen with bright futures ahead for their Comet careers earned wins in track and field events. Amelia Means picked up her second win in a row in the 300 hurdles, posting a new PR time of 57.04 seconds. Freshman shot put thrower Megan Lee won her fourth shot put event of the season, posting a throw of 30-feet, 2 1/2 inches. Lee took second in discus with a PR throw of 89-9. Teammate and senior leader Sarah Alspaugh took second behind Lee in shot put.

Junior pole vaulter Jillian Cook picked up her first win of the year against Hanover-Horton, earning a new clearance height personal best of 6-feet, 6 inches. Sophomore Payton Nichelson matched her career best high jump mark from the Addison dual meet with her second-straight win on a 5-feet measurement. It was the Nichelson's fifth win of the season in high jump. Nichelson is ranked 15th in the state standings for Division 3.

Jonesville's 4x100-meter team of Miley Dunlap, Zoey Udzik, Brooke Sharp and Payton Nichelson picked up the win for their team with a 55.33 mark.
