Jonathan Scott Says He “Did Not See” Romance With Zooey Deschanel Coming
Jonathan Scott knows that you think his romance with Zooey Deschanel is weird—at least, that’s what he mused in his People cover story with his fiancé. “When we first started dating, Zooey posted a picture of us together. It might’ve been the very first time we ever posted anything on social media,” he told the outlet. “And I remember I looked at it and I saw the first comment right below was ‘Why the hell is she with a Property Brother?!’ I was like, ‘Excuse me—rude!’”
“Why wouldn’t I be with you?” Zooey asked. “Our personalities are so compatible. It’s just that we’re from different worlds.”
The couple first met in 2019 while filming an episode of Carpool Karaoke alongside their siblings, Drew Scott and Emily Deschanel, and recently got engaged in August 2023. They opened up about the origin of their sweet romance, from their first date to their blended family.
The first date in question? It was at an escape room, tyvm. Zooey dished that it was a brand-new experience for her. “I had actually never done one, and he kept telling me how much he liked them,” she said. “It sounded very much up my alley and I loved it right away. I mean, I wasn’t good at the first one to be honest, but I’ve gotten pretty proficient.”
As for how they ended up together, Jonathan revealed that it was a pleasant surprise. “I’m not gonna lie—this I did not see coming,” he said before describing the New Girl star as “somebody who cares to make sure you get through the hard moments as well.”
Both Zooey and Jonathan were previously married to other partners before they crossed paths, and the Property Brother proudly holds the title of “bonus dad” to Zooey’s two young children with ex-husband Jacob Pechenik. “Our family is very deeply rooted and very blended,” Zooey added.
The couple has yet to make major plans for their wedding, but Zooey quips that they “do love to throw a party.”
“We’ve just been basking in engaged bliss and haven’t really figured out anything,” the She & Him singer said of her upcoming wedding with Jonathan. Given how well these two coordinate on the reg, something tells me their wedding will be just as sweet as their relationship. 🥹
