Jon Rahm has one of the most up-and-down years imaginable for a golfer. He’s currently ranked No. 1 in the world, with the 2021 U.S. Open under his belt, but COVID-19 has now knocked him out of two prominent events this summer.

In June, Rahm was removed from the course at the Memorial. He was up six strokes at the time, when he tested positive for the virus, and had to withdraw from play. It was a devastating moment for the superstar golfer from Spain.

The U.S. Open win weeks later helped salve what must’ve been a brutal turn of events for Rahm. However, COVID-19 has now reared its ugly head for him once more. Ahead of Olympics, where he was set to represent his home country, he has once again tested position. According to USA TODAY Sports, he failed three straight PCR tests in the United Kingdom, after finishing third at last week’s Open Championship.

“I’ve been fortunate to represent my country and win a championship for Spain around the world as an amateur. Playing in Tokyo would have given me a chance to win an Olympic gold medal for my country,” Rahm said in a statement. “I would have loved to have been the first Spanish Olympic gold medalist in golf, but unfortunately destiny had other plans. This is a great reminder for all of us that we’re still in a pandemic, things are not over, and we still need to fight together to get through this the best we can.”

It looks like Jon Rahm’s been hit with really awful luck when it comes to COVID-19 testing. He had the virus less than three months ago, and is vaccinated against it.

Vaccinated people can still contract the virus, but are nearly 100-percent protected from the worst possible outcomes, including hospitalization and death. Luckily, Rahm’s symptoms were reportedly mild the first time around. Hopefully that is the same case here, and he returns to the course without any lingering issues soon.

Rahm is the second significant golfer in as many days to pull out of the Tokyo Olympics. On Saturday, news broke U.S. golfer Bryson DeChambeau had tested positive. He is also out for the tournament.
