Quarterback Jon Kitna had a long, successful NFL career. He landed with the Seattle Seahawks in 1997, and was in the league through the 2011 season with the Dallas Cowboys. he spent the core of his career with the Cincinnati Bengals, making 46 starts for the franchise from 2001-05.

With that amount of time at the NFL level, Kitna has definitely seen some things. Considering how hectic some of those early 2000s Bengals teams were, that might be an understatement.

Kitna was a guest on The Ryen Russillo Podcast this week, and shared one pretty jarring story from his Bengals years. As a good teammate, he didn’t name names, but he claims that one of his wide receivers was clearly drunk in the huddle one game.

Apparently it didn’t affect that unnamed player’s performance though. Kitna recalls that he went off for “close to 200 yards receiving” in the game.

“There were some things that were hard to believe,” Jon Kitna said of his time in Cincinnati, via The Enquirer. “There was a time that I played a game with a guy that was drunk in the huddle.”

“There was a time that a guy showed up late to a game. In the NFL, you need to be there two hours, two hours and 15 minutes ahead of time. And he showed up under an hour before the game’s start. Those are weird things, now. That’s tough. I’m not sure if the staff knew. But I think the guy was like – that was kind of his normal. I mean he was drunk and had close to 200 yards receiving now. So, it was crazy.”

Kitna was 18-28 as Bengals starter. He was a pretty effective veteran, but the team didn’t really turn things around until Carson Palmer took the reins. Palmer, a former Heisman winner and three-time Pro Bowler, credits Kitna with being “the most instrumental individual in my career.”
