John McAfee died by suicide in Spanish jail cell: autopsy report

An autopsy has confirmed that software pioneer and fugitive John McAfee died by suicide in a jail cell near Barcelona while awaiting extradition to the United States, according to a Spanish newspaper.

El Pais reported Monday that the autopsy, conducted under Catalonia’s court system, would soon rule the death of the 75-year-old mogul a suicide. Javier Villalba, McAfee’s attorney, said last week that Janice McAfee, his widow, had already asked him to request a second, independent autopsy be performed.

The El Pais report comes after Janice McAfee demanded an immediate investigation into her husband’s death, sparking conspiracy theorists, after McAfee reportedly left a suicide note in his pocket.

A Spanish court had approved his extradition to the U.S. on tax evasion charges just hours before he was found dead. “We had a plan of action already in place to appeal that decision,” Janice McAfee said. “I blame the U.S. authorities for this tragedy. Because of these politically motivated charges against him my husband is now dead.”

McAfee had spent years on run from U.S. authorities after he was charged with tax evasion and cryptocurrency fraud.
