Freelance, the new film starring John Cena and Alison Brie, has joined the all-time 100 worst films list on Rotten Tomatoes.

The action comedy follows ex-special forces operative Mason Pettits (Cena), who takes on a job providing security for journalist Claire Wellington (Brie) as she interviews the dictator (Juan Pablo Raba) of a fictional country called Paldonia.

However, a military coup breaks out in the middle of the interview, forcing the trio into a jungle escape together as they try to survive, leading to all sorts of hijinks and armed conflict.

The film was panned upon its release last week (October 27), landing a 0% approval rating from its first 23 reviews. This reception has meant Freelance has joined the website's all-time worst films list, with the comedy currently sitting in 33rd place.

The worst reviewed film on the site is currently Ballistic: Ecks vs Sever, with other notable entries in the top 10 including Left Behind, A Thousand Words, Gotti and Jaws: The Revenge.

The consensus for Freelance has been uniformly negative thus far, with Slant Magazine terming the film as a "cinematic Frankenstein whose disparate genre elements have been cobbled together without much consideration or fuss".

Whilst Freelance has certainly disappointed critics, Cena will likely be hoping that the second season of Peacemaker can do more to satisfy viewers, with director James Gunn recently revealing that the scripts are being written.

"Creating Peacemaker has been one of the true highlights of my life, both professionally and otherwise, with John Cena and the incredible creative team around me, as well as our partners at HBO Max," said Gunn at the announcement of season two.

"To have something we all love so much be loved by the audience in turn has been a wonderful experience. I can't wait for folks to see where Team Peacemaker goes in season two."

Freelance is out now US cinemas.
