Star Wars favourite John Boyega has found his next big-screen project in The Freshening.

First reported by Deadline, this movie will see him teaming up with Birds of Prey director Cathy Yan, who's adapting Rachel Khong's sci-fi short story published in The Paris Review here.

Taking place in an alternate America dominated by a public health initiative known as 'the freshening', the movie finds the human race only capable of seeing their own race and gender.

To temporarily reverse this, Boyega's character Reese uses a drug and meets a woman named Sam afterwards.

Producers Ali Wong, Adam McKay and Betsy Koch, and Yan and Ash Sarohia shared in a joint statement ahead of filming later in the year: "We are tremendously excited to have John bring this complex character and story to life and can't wait to begin filming with this incredible group of like-minded creatives."

Yan went on to add: "It's a dream to work with John Boyega, a singular talent whose commitment to his craft and willingness to take risks have delivered such memorable, wide-ranging performances.

"I know he'll bring incredible depth and nuance to Reese. I'm thrilled he's on for this wild ride."

Elsewhere on the actor's agenda is a sequel to his breakout movie Attack the Block, which Boyega co-wrote alongside Joe Cornish.

"We've collaborated heavily on making a story that makes sense for Moses and the other characters, and the new characters that will be coming up in the sequel too," he teased last August to Collider.

"And then, also, there's different perspectives in writing it, with Joe having his perspective and me having mine. London has changed so much, in so many different ways, over the years since the first movie.

"We're just trying to make sure we explore all of that, while bringing in a whole different vibe to that crazy-ass first movie that we made."
