The Washington Football Team had far more questions than answers at the QB position after the 2020 season. But after Washington signed Ryan Fitzpatrick and making him their starter, Washington legend Joe Theismann has some thoughts on his former team’s plan at the position.

Appearing on Tiki and Tierney this week, Theismann expressed confidence in Washington’s plan at quarterback. He believes that Fitzpatrick has the experience to lead the team, while backup Taylor Heinicke will benefit from learning under him.

“I feel very confident in the fact that we have Ryan as our quarterback going into this particular season,” Theismann said. “I laugh, I saw him at minicamp last week, and I said,’ You have to have a lot of stickers on your suitcase, don’t you?’ And he said,’Yeah, I’ve got about nine of them.’ And we both started laughing. But he just keeps playing, and he’s actually been playing at a high level…”

Theismann feels that the team should feel confident enough to roll with the QBs they have all season. As a result, he doesn’t believe that the team will make any move for disgruntled stars like Deshaun Watson or Aaron Rodgers.

“But I don’t see Washington making a play for anybody. Deshaun [Watson], you just don’t know how that’s going to shake out. You just really don’t know, and I think that would be very, very unlikely. And the Aaron Rodgers thing would be completely out of the question because you’d mortgage the future… Ryan brings a lot to the position. I think Taylor is going to benefit from learning. I think Ryan will be the quarterback, I feel comfortable in saying that.”

Washington made the playoffs in 2020 with a 7-9 record. They lost in the Wildcard Round to the eventual Super Bowl champion Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But along the way, they had to release former first-round QB Dwayne Haskins, effectively scuttling their ongoing search for a franchise QB.

Alex Smith retired after the season, leaving them without a starter. So they signed Fitzpatrick to replace him.

No doubt the long-term goal for Washington is to find a young, franchise QB. But until then, they may have to settle for veterans if they want to avoid the NFL’s cellar.

What do you think the Washington Football Team’s record will be this coming season?
