Joe Burrow injury: What we know about the Bengals quarterback Saturday

Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow is out for the 2023 season after tearing a ligament in his right wrist during Thursday's game against the Baltimore Ravens, the Bengals announced Friday.

Burrow and head coach Zac Taylor spoke to reporters Friday about the injury. Taylor said it's likely the 26-year-old franchise quarterback will undergo surgery to repair the ligament. The injury occurred in the second quarter of the Bengals’ 34-20 loss to the Ravens, when Burrow said he felt a “pop” after throwing a four-yard touchdown pass to running back Joe Mixon.

A deleted video and Burrow's compression sleeve prompted the NFL to launch an investigation into whether Burrow should have been listed on the Bengals' injury report. Burrow said Friday the injury he suffered during the game was new, and not related to the compression sleeve he wore during his trip to Baltimore.

Here's what we know about Burrow's injury as of Saturday.

Burrow out for the season with torn ligament

Zac Taylor announced in a press conference Friday Burrow is expected to miss the rest of the season after tearing a ligament in his right wrist. The injury will likely require surgery, Taylor said.

Taylor said Burrow first injured his wrist when Ravens defensive end Jadeveon Clowney hit him in the second quarter and he landed on his wrist. Burrow said Friday he felt a “pop” when he threw a four-yard touchdown pass immediately afterward to running back Joe Mixon.

Burrow also said he “kind of had a feeling” after the game that it was a serious injury.

“It’s tough,” Burrow said. “You work so hard for seasons and moments like these, so whenever you get hurt and it ends it early, it’s tough to handle. But that’s part of the game, been through it before. Gotta grind it out."

Burrow also explained the wrist sleeve he was seen wearing in the Bengals' deleted social media video.

"This is a completely different thing," he told reporters. "It's not uncommon for guys to wear compression sleeves on a plane because when you go up to that altitude things can swell up."

"This is a completely new injury," he added.

NFL reportedly investigating why Burrow was left off injury report

The NFL is investigating why the Bengals did not list Burrow on their injury report ahead of Thursday's game, ESPN senior NFL insider Adam Schefter posted on X Friday.

The NFL routinely looks into matters of compliance with its injury report policy, Schefter said. Teams can be fined or even lose a draft pick if they violate the policy.

The Enquirer reached out to the Bengals for comment, but did not receive an immediate response.

Taylor initially thought Burrow sprained his wrist

Taylor said Thursday after the game it looked like Burrow sprained his wrist.

"It looked like he sprained his wrist," Taylor said. "He fell on it early in the game and then felt it on the touchdown pass."

When asked if Taylor thought Burrow would be able to return this season, he replied: "I have no idea. All the information I have is two seconds worth and then we went to go try to fight to win the game."

In terms of whether Burrow was dealing with an injury prior to the game, Taylor said he was "not aware" of any injury. Wide receiver Tyler Boyd also said he wasn't aware of Burrow dealing with anything outside of ordinary soreness, which most NFL players are feeling at this point in the season.

Burrow injured wrist during second quarter

It appeared to be a second-quarter hit from Ravens' Jadeveon Clowney that injured Burrow's wrist. The quarterback then grimaced as he squeezed his hand after throwing a touchdown pass to Joe Mixon.

Burrow was evaluated in the medical tent after the touchdown pass. He tried to throw on the sideline, but couldn't, and appeared to wince in pain.

The 26-year-old then went to the locker room. Backup quarterback Jake Browning entered the game in his place.

The Bengals initially said Burrow was questionable to return with a wrist injury, but he was later ruled out.

Burrow returned from the locker room to the sideline during halftime.

Burrow arrived to Baltimore wearing device on right hand

The Bengals posted a photo and video on social media Wednesday evening of players arriving in Baltimore. Burrow appeared to be wearing a fingerless, soft black sleeve on his right hand, sending some Cincinnati fans into a panic.

The Bengals deleted the posts that same night.

Burrow was not wearing the device on his hand when he arrived to M&T Bank Stadium on Thursday.
