Joe Alwyn followed in his father’s footsteps when it came to a career in film.

The Conversations with Friends actor was born on Feb. 21, 1991, to Richard and Elizabeth Alwyn and was raised in London. Richard is a documentary filmmaker, while Elizabeth is a psychotherapist.

In addition to Joe, Richard and Elizabeth share two more sons: Thomas and Patrick. Alwyn previously datedTaylor Swift for six years before their break up in April 2023, and she was close to his whole family.

Richard is a documentary filmmaker

Growing up, Richard was often out of town filming in “crisis zones” like Uganda and Rwanda, Joe told The Standard in February 2017.

For his birthdays and Christmas presents, Richard would give Joe stacks of films on VHS tapes, instilling a love for movies in him early on.

“He makes fly-on-the-wall, observational human stories,” he told The Guardianin April 2022. “When I was growing up, he was often away, and I remember him being in these far-flung places a lot, bringing back cool gifts for me and my brother.”

Elizabeth is a psychotherapist

Joe’s mother, Elizabeth, worked as a therapist, which always intrigued Joe as an alternative career to film.

“I never felt like I was lying down on the couch and being analyzed every evening, which is probably a good thing,” he told The Guardian of his mom’s job. “I managed to escape that. But she’s great with people and great to talk to. People always think that must be strange, having a mum who’s a therapist.”

Not only did Joe find nothing strange about his mom’s job, but he also told he outlet he thought it was an “amazing” occupation.

“I actually think if I didn’t do this, I would be interested in doing something like that,” he said.

They share three sons

Before Joe was born, Richard and Elizabeth welcomed their first son, Thomas. Years later, they had their third son, Patrick, while Joe was in secondary school, he told The Guardian.

Though Thomas has stayed out of the spotlight, Joe’s younger brother, Patrick, has been linked to celebrities like Sadie Sink, who starred in Swift’s All Too Well music video, after they were spotted walking in N.Y.C. together. However, their relationship was never confirmed.

They have spent time with Taylor Swift

Alwyn and Swift kept the majority of their relationship private, but they were once spotted enjoying a stroll through London with Joe’s mom.

In January 2021, E! News published photos that captured Elizabeth, Swift and Alwyn on a walk through North London Public Park, all donning masks to protect from COVID-19 and in warm coats. Alwyn and Swift were holding hands in the photos.

Richard comes from a line of famous composers and directors

A passion for film seems to run in the Alwyn family, as Richard’s father was also a director and a producer, per IMDb. His grandfather, William Alwyn, was a famous composer who helped found the Composers’ Guild of Great Britain and taught at London’s Royal Academy of Music for over three decades.

In 1978, he was awarded a Commander of the British Empire (CBE) title for his services to music.

Joe took inspiration from his name when he collaborated with Swift under the pseudonym William Bowery. The former couple wrote together for Swift’s 2020 album Folklore, with Swift confirming William Bowery was indeed Joe while discussing the song “Exile” in her Disney+ film Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Sessions.

"There's been a lot of discussion about William Bowery and his identity 'cause it's not a real person," she said. "William Bowery is Joe, as we know."
