Jobs, jobs, jobs! Fresno area public sectors are hiring in 2023. Here’s how to apply

From educators to electricians and engineers, Fresno area public sectors – state agencies to local school districts – want you to work for them in 2023.

Between November 2021 and November 2022, educational and health services posted the largest year-over increase in Fresno County jobs, adding 3,500 jobs, almost all of which were in health care and social assistance positions, according to the most recent data from the California Employment Development Department.

The next highest growing sector was in government, which added 2,100 jobs since November 2021. Most of these positions were concentrated in local government positions, with 1,700 jobs. During this time frame, the state government added 200 while the federal government added 200 positions in Fresno County.

With government and education jobs as some of the fastest growing sectors as the year comes to a close, here’s a sampling of the positions available and details on how you can apply.

Fresno County-based public education jobs

From elementary school to four-year universities, Fresno’s public education institutions have hundreds of full-time job openings.

Central Unified School District

As of Dec. 19, Central Unified School District has 57 open positions, ranging from cooks to coaches, teachers to technicians.

Special education aide positions pay around $20-26 per hour, while credentialed teaching positions pay between $57,000 - $109,000. Transportation mechanics can earn between $26 to $32 per hour, while bus drivers can earn between $22 to $27 per hour.

Central Unified also has a Teachers of Color Pipeline Program to encourage and mentor students of color to pursue careers in teaching.

Fresno Unified School District

Fresno Unified has 71 classified, certificated, and management positions available.

The district is looking for educational support staff, such as nine child welfare and attendance specialists with pay ranging from $21 to $26 per hour; sign language interpreters with pay of $34 to $41.50 per hour. The district also needs custodians, who earn between $16.50- $20.29 per hour.

The district is also looking for nutrition service assistants, bilingual child development staff, as well as bilingual teachers, speech therapists, nursing staff, and teachers for a variety of grade levels and subjects. Details on teacher salary schedules are available here.

There are 15 management positions available, from vice principals to human resources, to analyst positions.

At the management level, human resource analysts can earn $84,058 to $102,174 annually, while business operations managers can earn between $97,000 to $118,000 annually.

Clovis Unified School District, meanwhile, has 154 vacancies that include positions for transportation and groundskeeping, school psychologists, coaches, bus drivers, mechanics, and, of course, teachers.

Special education assistant staff is also in demand. The district also has a paid training program for college graduates and graduating seniors interested in earning a special education credential. State Center Community College District, which serves a number of Central Valley community colleges including Fresno City College, has 42 open positions in administrative and instructional capacities. A number of full-time office assistant positions are available, with salaries ranging from $37,000 to $45,000 annually.

In addition to food services and groundskeeping positions, the district is looking for a building trades generalist, with a salary ranging from $69,000 to $84,000 annually.

California State University, Fresno

Fresno State is one of the top employers in Fresno County, according to the EDD.

Fresno city, county positions hiring

The city of Fresno has 77 open positions from bus mechanics to police officers to engineers.

Fresno Yosemite International Airport has a number of positions available, including temporary field and office work positions, starting at $19 per hour. An airport electrician job pays a monthly salary of $6,390, and an airport safety management system manager with a salary ranging from $8,370 to $10,197 monthly.

The Department of Public Works is looking for an irrigation specialist, with a monthly salary of $4,000 to 4,900. Meanwhile, the department of Public Utilities Water Division has an opening for a water system supervisor at a monthly pay of $7,300 to $8,800.

The Planning and Development Department is looking for a senior community revitalization specialist for a range of $5,914 to $7,123, as well as a housing and neighborhood revitalization manager, with a monthly salary of $9,000 to $11,000.

The city is also looking for information technology programmers, paying from $6,521 to $7,870.

Meanwhile, there are 11 open positions listed on Fresno County’s Employment services website.

Jobs range from clerk and administrative positions paying $35,000 to $50,000 annually. Other positions include a social worker, finance division chief, public health microbiologist, environmental health specialist, forensic pathologist, and more. Pay ranges from $45,000 to over $100,000 annually, depending on the position.

California state jobs based in Fresno County

There are 173 Fresno County-based state jobs available on the CalCareers state job website, as of Dec. 19 in sectors from healthcare to the trades.

Engineering:

These senior engineering and planner positions with the California Department of Transportation, or CalTrans, and the CA High Speed Rail Authority.

Transportation planner jobs range from $9,196 to $10,442, while senior transportation engineers start at $10,569 to $13,228. A Senior Environmental Planner position for the High Speed Rail ranges from $7,563 to $9,398.

Medicine and healthcare:

The Department of State Hospitals, Department of Veteran Affairs, and Fresno County state correctional facilities are looking for medical assistants, nurses, physicians, physical therapists, social workers, behavior specialists, psychologists, and healthcare executives. Meanwhile, the Department of Social Services is looking for a number of medical consultants.

Pay ranges widely: nursing assistants with the Department of Veteran Affairs start at $1,029 to $1,383 monthly while registered nurses with the California Correctional Health Care Services get a monthly salary range from $7,310 to $11,000. Pay for Psychologists range from $6,000 to $12,000 monthly.

Trades:

The Department of Forestry and Fire Protection – CalFire – is looking for carpenters for building maintenance and structure work for a monthly salary ranging from $4,861 to $6,151.

CalTrans is looking for heavy equipment mechanics starting at $5,236 to $6,035 and equipment operators for maintenance work near Shaver Lake, for monthly pay of $4,559 to $5,500.
