The University of Kentucky men’s soccer team has positioned itself for a postseason to remember.

The Wildcats defeated South Carolina, 3-0, in Columbia, S.C., on Tuesday night to complete the first undefeated regular season in program history.

Kentucky, ranked No. 2 in the nation in this week’s United Soccer Coaches poll, takes a record of 11 wins, no losses and five ties into the postseason.

Tuesday night’s victory also clinched the Sun Belt Conference championship for the Wildcats in their first season in the league after moving from Conference USA. UK finished 5-0-3 in Sun Belt play.

“We’re really happy that we’re regular-season champions, but that’s not enough for us. … The job’s not finished,” assistant coach Ryan Zinkhan said after the match. “We’re really excited. It’s rest/recovery, then it’s on to postseason.”

Kentucky is one of three NCAA Division I men’s soccer programs still undefeated, joined by No. 1-ranked Washington (13-0-3) and No. 3 Duke (11-0-4).

UK is the No. 1 seed for the Sun Belt Conference Tournament, which starts this weekend and promises an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament to the champion.

Kentucky opens the tournament with a quarterfinal match against No. 8 seed South Carolina (5-7-4) on Sunday at 7 p.m. at UK’s Bell Soccer Complex. The match will be streamed live on ESPN Plus. No. 4 seed West Virginia (6-6-4) and No. 5 Coastal Carolina (5-4-6) will also face off at the Bell on Sunday at 3 p.m.

The winners of those two matches will meet in Wednesday’s semifinals at 7 p.m. in Lexington.

The other half of the Sun Belt bracket plays out at No. 2 seed Marshall. The Thundering Herd (10-2-3) hosts No. 7 seed James Madison (6-7-4) at 3 p.m. Sunday before a game between No. 3 seed Georgia State (11-3-3) and No. 6 Old Dominion (6-7-2). The semifinal match at Marshall is set for Wednesday at 7 pm.

The championship match takes place Sunday, Nov. 13 at 1 p.m. at the home of the highest remaining seed.

Kentucky defeated South Carolina on Tuesday night with two goals from Enzo Mauriz (35:45 and 63:03) and one from Casper Grening (82:55). Nick Gutmann assisted on all three scores. Grening’s goal was his eighth this season, tying Eythor Bjorgolfsson for the team lead.

“Just a really good performance from the boys tonight,” Zinkhan said. “It was a really professional mentality. We knew that South Carolina was not going to make it easy.”

The Wildcats outshot the Gamecocks 25-3, including 10-0 on goal. UK took nine corner kicks to South Carolina’s one.

Freshman goalkeeper Casper Mols recorded his eighth shutout this season.
