Joanna Gaines's Tiled Accent Wall Has the Internet Full-On Fighting

Joanna Gaines recently tackled her smallest project yet in a new TV special called Mini Reni. During the renovation, she made an unexpected decision: to add an accent wall of tiles in the breakfast nook. She shared before and after images of the space on Instagram, and the uncommon design feature has fans divided.

"A tiled accent wall and a place to gather set this breakfast nook apart," Gaines wrote in her post, prompting fans to check out images of the transformation and to read more about it on her blog.

She selected rectangular tiles in a gold-and-white checkered pattern to make the ceiling height of the room seem taller and the overall space feel bigger. While she didn't specify where the tiles are from, we suspect they're the beige and white Magnolia subway tiles from Mineral Tiles.

Since tiled walls are typically seen in bathrooms and kitchens, the decision shocked fans. Many didn't love the idea, making comments like "Noooo that tile is awful" and "Tile around a window is a no-no, then THAT tile is the worst." Others pointed out that the concept involves more work and commitment to achieve. "It's going to be much harder than just painting to change this plus more expensive," one person wrote. "You'll probably have to replace drywall. It is very fun and creative though."

Some folks went slightly off-topic with their distaste for the style. "I miss your seeing your shiplap and farmhouse designs," one fan wrote.

On the other hand, plenty of people were enamored of the idea. One fan wrote, "I would have never thought to tile a wall not in a kitchen or bathroom… and I’m OBSESSED!! Big impact in a small space."

Another added, "So fun!!! It might not be for everyone, but isn’t that the point?! Your home should be a reflection of you—no one else!!"

Whether you like the idea or not, there's no denying that this tiled accent wall is innovative. And if you're looking for more ways to set apart a specific area, like this breakfast nook, we have you covered with accent wall designs that'll add a touch of dimension, intrigue, and style to your space.
