Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter celebrate 75th anniversary

Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter marked their 75th wedding anniversary Wednesday and celebrated the occasion Saturday night with a 300-person party in their hometown.

The two are the longest-married presidential couple, and Jimmy, 96, has lived longer than any other U.S. president.

At the party in Plains, Ga., 93-year-old Rosalynn remembered being scared of dating young men before meeting Jimmy on a date set up by his younger sister, Ruth.

“I didn’t know how to talk to them, I didn’t want to go out with them,” she said. “And then, along came Jimmy Carter and my life has been an adventure ever since.”

The Carters married July 7, 1946, in Plains, which has a population under 1,000 and sits about 120 miles south of Atlanta.

“Space and doing things together and respecting what each other can do are the things that have made it really special,” Rosalynn said five years ago on their 70th anniversary.
