The list of obscurely named college football bowl games just added another contender.

During last night’s episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live!, the popular American television host announced that his late-night show won’t be the only thing bearing his namesake. Jimmy Kimmel has become the latest sponsor of a college football bowl game: the “Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl.”

The game will take place in Los Angeles’ brand new Sofi Stadium on Dec. 18, 2021.

“This is not a joke,” Kimmel said. “This is a real bowl game named after me, so mark your calendars. … It’s like an early Christmas gift for all of us.”

The “LA Bowl” without the Jimmy Kimmel sponsor was supposed to make its debut in Sofi Stadium back in 2020 before it was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Kimmel took this delay as an opportunity to strike a multimillion dollar deal with Sofi to become the event’s first sponsor, per ESPN.

This announcement comes at an interesting time in college football.

The College Football Playoff management committee is currently working on a proposal to expand the current four-team CFP format to a 12-team model. This move is partially due to the recent watering down of bowl season. With more and more bowl games popping up to generate revenue, once highly-anticipated and highly-important games now fade in comparison to the main CFP games.

The bowl game matchup will feature the Mountain West champion vs. the No. 5 bowl selection from the Pac 12.
