Jimmy Haslam exited Pilot, but his vast sports empire spans from Browns to Bucks and beyond

Billionaire Jimmy Haslam and his family have exited Pilot Company, but his holdings are vastly diversified with stakes in several sports teams.

The Haslam family announced Jan. 16 it sold its remaining 20% stake in Pilot, headquartered in Knoxville, to Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway.

Jimmy Haslam, 69, has an estimated net worth of $8.7 billion, according to Forbes. He was 99th on the 2023 Forbes 400 wealthiest Americans list and 567th on Forbes' list of billionaires.

Haslam and his wife, Dee, are chairman and CEO, respectively, of the Haslam Sports Group, which manages several professional teams and athletic facilities.

Jimmy Haslam owns Cleveland Browns

Jimmy and Dee Haslam became the majority owners of the Cleveland Browns in 2012 for over $1 billion. Forbes ranks the Browns as the 19th most valuable NFL franchise at $4.62 billion.

And a Major League Soccer team

The Haslams continued their ventures into the sports world, agreeing to purchase the Columbus Crew, an MLS team in Columbus, Ohio, in 2018.

Forbes estimated the sale of the team to be $150 million.

Jimmy Haslam is now a minority owner of Milwaukee Bucks

In 2023, Haslam Sports Group purchased a 25% share in the Milwaukee Bucks for $800 million, according to a report by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel. Forbes values the Bucks at $3.2 billion, ranking 20th in the NBA.

Haslam Sports Group also manages five facilities in Ohio:

  • Cleveland Browns Stadium

  • Lower.com Field

  • Historic Crew Stadium

  • OhioHealth Performance Center

  • CrossCountry Mortgage campus
