Jimmies women's hockey gets 3-1 win over Bottineau

Nov. 11—JAMESTOWN — Adorned in purple jerseys honoring those who have fought against cancer, the University of Jamestown women's hockey team got a 3-1 win over Dakota College at Bottineau on Saturday, Nov. 11, at John L. Wilson Arena.

The Jimmies all had roses in their hands prior to the "Hockey Fights Cancer" game honoring those who have fought against the disease.

"Actually, I find it really important because it's a day that we were fighting so getting that win just means so much more," Jimmies forward Kiran Vugteveen said.

The Jimmies opened the scoring midway through the first when Jayden Baker roofed a backhander up and over the Lumberjacks goalie Kara Zelyck to make it 1-0. The Jimmies added another one on a wraparound from Kiran Vugteveen to make it 2-0 with 2:40 to go in the first period. Those two goals were part of 14 shots that the Jimmies hand in the period as they outshot the Lumberjacks 14-5.

"I think always we're gripping our sticks tight a little bit until we score a goal," Jimmies head coach Amber Schaack said. "So it definitely helped us take a deep breath and continue to play our game."

The Jimmies kept it going in the second period as they scored midway through the period to make it 3-0. However, Baker went to the box and it cost the Jimmies as with 3:36 to go the Lumberjacks' Jenesha Hammond deflected a shot in to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Jimmies called upon goalie Bailey Lindsay to make her first start of the season and she had 16 saves on 17 shots. On the other side, the Lumberjacks' Kara Zelyck made 49 saves on 52 shots.

The Jimmies struggled on the power play in this one as they went 0-for-6, their worst mark since they went 0-6 in a win over Midland University on Jan. 15, 2023.

"They (the Lumberjacks) were aggressive so that helped out a lot," Schaack said. "It's something that we're continuing to work on, moving the puck, letting the puck do the work. They were pretty contained and like I said they pressured pretty hard and they have a good PK (penalty kill), so it was nice for us to see that too."

The Jimmies are back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 18, when they host Minot State University.
