Is Jimmie Johnson still racing? NASCAR icon scheduled for 2024 Daytona 500, 8 other races

Jimmie Johnson, who retired from the NASCAR Cup Series fulltime circuit in 2020, has returned to the track in 2024.

Johnson, 48, who was part of the NASCAR 2024 Hall of Fame class, is in his second season running part-time while representing Carvana.

Returning this season will provide Johnson the opportunity to break a tie with Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt for the most NASCAR Cup Series championships. All three have seven championships. Johnson already owns the record for most consecutive titles (2006-10).

Jimmie Johnson joins Extreme E racing for 2024

Jimmie Johnson announced Monday he will lead Legacy Motor Club in the Extreme E series in 2024.

Extreme E is an off-road series featuring all-electric SUVs racing in internationally remote locations and extreme environments.

Johnson won't race in the opening weekend (Feb. 17-18) of the E Extreme series because he is in the Daytona 500. Travis Pastrana and Gray Leadbetter are representing Legacy Motor Club in the series, which is kicking off its fourth season in Saudi Arabia.

“The opportunity to field an off-road vehicle in the Extreme E championship is exciting in many ways,” Johnson said in a news release. “We are essentially representing America in this unique and very competitive series and we are committed to the challenge. I’m excited to watch our Legacy Motor Club colors race on foreign soil for the first time while I’m in Daytona for the Great American race. I know Travis and Gray will represent us well and I can’t wait to see what they accomplish.”
