Michigan head coach Jim Harbaugh has been searching for a new defensive coordinator since letting Don Brown go earlier this month. And his pick is officially a respected NFL coach.

On Sunday, the Michigan football program officially announced the hire of Mike Macdonald as their new defensive coordinator. Macdonald most recently served as linebackers coach for the Baltimore Ravens, whose season ended yesterday.

But Macdonald’s experience isn’t just limited to working with linebackers. He coached safeties at Georgia before joining the Ravens in 2014.

In an official statement, Harbaugh praised Macdonald as “an excellent defensive mind who is highly respected across the NFL.” He stated his excitement for what Macdonald can bring to the Michigan defense.

“Mike is an excellent defensive mind who is highly respected across the NFL,” said Harbaugh, the J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Head Football Coach. “He has been a valuable member of the Baltimore Ravens staff, and shown a passion for teaching, coaching and developing his players. We are excited about everything that Mike brings to our defense, team and university, and look forward to welcoming him and his fiancé Stephanie to our Michigan Football family.”

Michigan are coming off one of their worst seasons in generations, going just 2-4 thanks in no small part to a porous defense. But that didn’t stop the Wolverines from signing Harbaugh to a contract extension – albeit with a pay cut.

Harbaugh has his work cut out for him as he tries to bring Michigan back to the top tier of college football programs. 2020 was a clear step in the wrong direction, but maybe hiring Mike Macdonald will help him take a step forward.
