Jim Harbaugh Has Blunt Message About Beating Ohio State

The once-great Ohio State-Michigan rivalry has been pretty lopsided in recent years.

Dating back to 2012, the Buckeyes have now taken down the Wolverines in eight straight matchups. The last time Michigan claimed victory was with a 40-34 win back in 2011, breaking another seven-game streak for OSU.

Since taking over as Michigan’s head coach in 2015, Jim Harbaugh has never defeated Ohio State — and for the most part, the games haven’t exactly been close. Through his 0-5 record against the Buckeyes, the seventh-year UM head coach has logged a total series score of 221-126.

During a Big Ten Media Day press conference on Thursday, Harbaugh shared his approach to the rivalry moving forward.

“We’re going to do it or die trying,” he said of beating Ohio State, per Buckeyes insider Jeremy Birmingham.

Harbaugh’s closest matchup against Ohio State came in a thrilling 30-27 double-overtime loss where his No. 3 Wolverines fell to the No. 2 Buckeyes in 2016. His most lopsided losses against OSU are a pair of 29-point defeats occurring in his first season in 2015 (42-13) and his most recent matchup in 2019 (56-27).

While the Wolverines didn’t have to face off against the Buckeyes in this past year’s COVID-19 season, Harbaugh and his squad still struggled to come out on top. Through a severely shortened Big Ten season, Michigan notched a disappointing 2-4 record.

Following last year’s rivalry hiatus, Michigan is set to take on Ohio State in the final game of the regular season on Nov. 27.
