The Nintendo Switch gets new additions to its retro library roughly once a month at this point, and the next game set to be released is an exciting one for fans. Nintendo has announced that the Nintendo 64 classic shooter Jet Force Gemini is headed to Nintendo Switch Online.

The announcement was made on YouTube, with Nintendo’s Japanese branch announcing it first – alongside Goldeneye 007, which was previously released in the West – and then subsequently confirmed by Nintendo of America and Nintendo Australia on Twitter.

Sadly, it didn’t come with an amazing trailer, like the Excitebike 64 trailer which saw Nintendo’s marketing team let loose, but we think that’s because it was a bit of a surprise to most Nintendo branches. Nintendo America is usually the first to post about games coming to the service, so it’s entirely possible that the US, European, and ANZ branches simply weren’t aware, or didn’t have time to put together a trailer.

Jet Force Gemini is one of the most beloved games on the Nintendo 64, with its excellent third-person shooter gameplay, in-depth single-player campaign, and surprisingly great splitscreen multiplayer mode all adoring fans to it since launch.

The game was developed by Rare, who also developed games like Blast Corps, Banjo Kazooie, and Goldeneye 007 — the latter two of which previously came to Nintendo Switch Online. It was seen as a bit of a long shot to come to the Switch, given Rare is owned by Microsoft these days and Banjo and Goldeneye were somewhat special cases.

Still, it’s exciting to see the Nintendo Switch Online library expand with such a great game, especially since it’ll have online play built-in, like all NSO games.

It comes during a year of fantastic releases for the retro subscription service, with two of the best Zelda games getting added to the Switch back in July, and two of the best NES games being added just last month.

The exact release date for Jet Force Gemini is unknown at this stage — Nintendo’s Japanese video said it and Goldeneye would be coming on November 30, 2023, while Nintendo of America and Australia both said it would be coming in December. Usually Nintendo Switch Online games are released at the same time worldwide, so we’re not really sure what’s happening here.

Jet Force Gemini will be available to subscribers of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack, the higher tier of Nintendo Switch Online that includes Nintendo 64 and Sega Genesis games, as well as DLC for various games.
