New Jersey loves their moms. State ranks second in nation in being close with mothers

Are you close to mom?

If you're from New Jersey, there's a pretty good chance you are.

According to a survey by Mixbook, when it comes to being close to mom, both emotionally and geographically, New Jersey is near the top.

The Garden State sits second, trailing only Maryland when it comes to being close with mom. That probably means if you want to do brunch on Mother's Day, you'll want to soon make reservations.

Maryland scored 87.06 out of 100 in being close to mom. New Jersey scored an 85.22.

Other states near the top of the list are Tennessee (83.94), New York (83.58) and Colorado (83.53). Rounding out the top 10 are Louisiana, California, Arkansas, Missouri and North Carolina.

Oregon is the state that's least closest to mom, followed by New Mexico, Washington, Iowa and Nebraska. The rest of the bottom 10 are Georgia, Minnesota, Michigan, West Virginia and Utah.

The survey questioned 2,021 Americans, and found several other cool findings.

About 48 percent of people wish they were closer to mom.

One of the top ways people bond with their mother is through sharing life updates, celebrating holidays and milestones, and sharing emotions, both positive and negative.

On the flip side, things people are least likely to do with their moms are seek advice, engage in shared interest or give physical affection.

The top five reasons people cited for not being close to mom were different personalities (19 percent), unresolved resentment or hurt (19 percent), past trauma or abuse (18 percent), lack of respect for boundaries (15 percent) and different values (14 percent).

Are Americans closer with mom or dad?

But it wasn't all bad news.

According to the survey, 61 percent of responders were closer to mom than dad.

How do most people celebrate Mother's Day?

According to the survey, most people celebrate the holiday (54 percent) by sending or giving mom a gift. Another 39 percent call mom, while 33 percent visit her. Taking mom out (26 percent) and sending flowers (18 percent) round out the top five ways to celebrate.
