Jerry Jones Reveals Simple Reason For Trading Amari Cooper
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones had to address a few big moves that his team made this offseason. But none were bigger than trading wide receiver Amari Cooper to the Cleveland Browns.
Speaking to the media on Monday, Jones was asked to address why the team chose to trade Cooper rather than clear cap space to pay him his $20 million salary. Jones bluntly replied that the team felt the money would be “better spent” elsewhere.
“We made a decision that that allocation should be better spent,” Jones said.
The Cowboys used some of that money to extend wide receivers Michael Gallup and Noah Brown while bringing James Washington into the fold. They also extended pass rusher Demarcus Lawrence while franchise tagging tight end Dalton Schultz.

But the thing that may grind Cowboys fans’ gears the most will be the limited compensation they received for Amari Cooper. The Cleveland Browns only needed to give the Cowboys a fifth-round pick and swap a sixth in order to get him.
Meanwhile, wide receivers like Davante Adams and Tyreek Hill netted their original teams at least one first round pick.
Jerry Jones and the Cowboys may have been a little too quick to unload Hill given what the market became shortly afterwards.
If the offense improves in Cooper’s absence, it won’t matter much. But if it doesn’t, there are going to be a lot of angry Cowboys fans in the months to come.
