Jerry Jones: Odell Beckham pursuit akin to Dallas Cowboys’ 1995 wooing of Deion Sanders

When it comes to free agent receiver Odell Beckham Jr., the Dallas Cowboys are on one accord from the front office on down to the locker room: he is a potential difference-making player who could boost their Super Bowl title hopes.

Much still must be worked out before the Cowboys can get a deal done with Beckham Jr. He is also drawing interest from other teams.

But the focus in Dallas is clear.

“We want him. We want OBJ,” said running back Ezekiel Elliott in a refrain that has been echoed by quarterback Dak Prescott, receiver CeeDee Lamb, linebacker Micah Parsons as well as owner Jerry Jones.

Said Prescott: “Any time you have a chance to add a talent like that and knowing Odell and knowing his resume, its exciting.”

Receiver CeeDee Lamb, who is the team’s current No. 1 receiver, said he would welcome Beckham to the team with open arms and doesn’t see it as a slight to current group of receivers.

“That’s my boy. I’m a fan of Odell for sure,” Lamb said. “Why wouldn’t you want to more firepower to this offense.”

While the Cowboys like their team’s chance of making a title run — they are 6-2 and have the promise of getting better on the second half of the season as is — they believe the addition of Beckham has a chance to put them over the top.

Jones, who has openly talked about adding a Deion Sanders-like impact player to the team for the past couple of weeks, said the situation reminds him of when he talked to quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Emmitt Smith and receiver Michael Irvin about signing the Hall of Fame cornerback in 1995.

It was the final piece that led to a Super Bowl title, the last of three in the 1990s. The Cowboys have not been back since.

“They said, ‘Jerry, get him!’ ” Jones recalled on his radio show on 105.3 The Fan. “I love it, that the (current players) have that kind of perspective.”

“At the end of the day, winning the game, winning the next one and winning when you get to the playoffs, that’s the overriding thing that’s going on here with our team. That’s what makes this thing so exciting. Whatever it takes.”
