With age comes wisdom. And at 52, Jennifer Garner knows one thing is true: “Moisture is the name of the game for ladies of a certain age,” she says of her skincare routine. "We lose moisture really easily so we need to make sure we’re not stripping our skin.”

The adage remains true, no matter the season. We typically think of winter as parched skin time, but dryness can strike even as outside temperatures and humidity rises. And while you may think that a movie star like Garner splurges on the fanciest of creams to keep her skin looking great, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the star stocks her bathroom with drugstore skincare staples you can find at a store right near you.

What's she using as the weather heats up? Garner shared her summer must-haves with Women's Health.

Garner loves this lightweight moisturizer for summer

Garner isn’t a fan of super rich moisturizers, which is why she swears by the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Water Cream, which is available on Amazon as part of a bundle with the brand's hydrating cleanser. The weightless formula is said to provide hydration for up to 72 hours.“The hyaluronic acid holds moisture right at the surface of your skin, and as it warms up outside, it’s so light that you don’t feel heavy,” she raves.

For everyday UV protection, Garner loves this sunscreen

When it comes to finding the right SPF for her skin, Garner, like most of us, has done her share of trial and error. The product she’s loving right now: Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense Face Serum. “I love a multi-tasker. It’s a moisturizer, it’s an SPF of 60, and it’s a primer for your makeup,” she says. “The serum just seems to get right to the heart of things with your skin, and I think it works really well layered underneath something else.”

Garner also pairs her SPF with the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hyaluronic Acid Serum, which she uses morning and night. It’s formulated with both hyaluronic acid and glycerin, two humectants that hold onto moisture in the skin. And the benefits go beyond just a healthy outer layer: “Hyaluronic acid is the key to [plumper skin]. Any dermatologist will tell you there are two things you should use to change your skin for the better: Hyaluronic acid and retinol.”

Garner never skips on cleansing before bed

Taking SPF off at the end of the day is an absolute must for Garner. But if she has a lot of makeup on her face because of work, she starts with the Neutrogena Cleansing Wipes as a first step. “The best thing you can do is go to bed every night with a clean face,” she says. After using the wipes, she follows up with the Neutrogena Hydro Boost Hydrating Gel Cleanser. “It's gentle, it's fragrance-free, it's clinically tested, it's totally safe, and it kick-starts the process of feeding your skin and locking in moisture.”

She doesn’t shy away from the occasional facial

While Garner has never tried peels or laser treatments, she’s a fan of facials by LA-based esthetician Nerida Joy. “Nerida is really big on massage, and I think that’s a great way to keep the blood flowing in your face. The more natural the better,” she says. “You don’t know what lasers and facials are going to do to your skin long term, so my preference is to keep it simple.”

As it turns out, her take on new products is similar. Garner is often curious about what’s new on the market, but she's not one to jump on a skincare bandwagon. “I think it’s really easy to focus on what’s viral, and then you can look at your counter and have 20 different things,” she says. “I don’t know if that’s really adding to the vitality of your skin.”
