Does Jelly Roll enjoy eating jelly roll cakes?

"You know what? Nobody's ever asked, and I kind of do," the country star, 39, tells PEOPLE of the dessert he shares a stage name with, a.k.a. a sponge cake rolled with sweet filling.

"But here's a funny thing. I didn't realize that jelly rolls were cakes," clarifies the "Need a Favor" singer, who was born Jason Bradley DeFord. "I got named Jelly Roll after a jelly donut. My mother didn't know there was a different pastry called a jelly roll."

The Grammy-nominated musician originally received the nickname from his mother as a child for his chubby figure, and his high school classmates later caught on and started calling him Jelly Roll as well.

Of course, that was long before he broke through to mainstream success with his Ballads of the Broken album in 2021 and earned hits with songs including "Son of a Sinner" and "Save Me." Now, the performer tells PEOPLE he receives jelly roll cakes "all the time" as gifts.

"It is awesome. Venues will always have one," says Jelly, before divulging his favorite flavors: "I love anything with strawberry or grape in it."

The "Wild Ones" vocalist recently opened up to PEOPLE about preparing for the 2 Bears 5K with Bert Kreischer and Tom Segura at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, on May 7 and explained he's been working hard on his physical fitness — and feeling good.

"I'm probably down 70-something pounds," said Jelly. "I've been really kicking ass, man. I'm doing two to three miles a day, four to six days a week. I'm doing 20 to 30 minutes in the sauna, six minutes in a cold plunge every day. I'm eating healthy right now."

At the moment, he's happy with his progress and looking to continue with the lifestyle shift. "I feel really good," he continued. "I was thinking, I plan on losing another 100, 100-and-something [pounds]. If I feel this good down this weight, man, I can only imagine what I'm going to feel like by the time I go on tour."

Losing weight is just one of the many accomplishments that've come Jelly's way in 2024 so far. He recently won three iHeartRadio Music Awards and two CMT Music Awards before receiving his first four ACM Award nominations for the upcoming 2024 ceremony on May 16.

The father of two and husband of Bunnie Xo earned nods for single of the year for "Need a Favor," music event of the year for "Save Me" with Lainey Wilson, male artist of the year and entertainer of the year — making him the first artist to go from having never been nominated at the ACMs to landing a spot in the entertainer of the year category since Billy Ray Cyrus in 1993.

Only after finding out about the ACMs nods was Jelly finally able to take in all the recent successes. "I've been getting healthier, and every morning we get in the sauna, me and my buddies, and we do highs and lows and a gratitude, and man, I just couldn't get off gratitude," he said.

"I spent my whole life just thinking that what I was doing would never be heard or seen," admitted Jelly. "I almost gave up on any dream of this thing ever being like it is now, and man, is it just incredible to be in the middle of it. I'm grateful."
