Jefferson, Dundee, Bedford, Carlson capture wrestling league titles

RIVERVIEW – Jefferson’s wrestling team won its fourth consecutive Huron League Championship Saturday, but New Boston Huron made the Bears work for it.

Jefferson, which won the dual-meet portion of the league schedule, added the league tournament title Saturday by scoring 230 points.

Huron was second with 203 followed by Airport with 154, Grosse Ile with 93, Milan 58, St. Mary Catholic Central 45, Flat Rock 41 and Riverview 7.

“It was a special day for this Jefferson team,” Jefferson coach Ryan Nadeau said. “It is a testament to the program and to the dedication of these young athletes. We are very proud.”

Ty Rose (126), Carter Simota (144), Martre Pearson (165) and Anthony Cousino (285) were champions for Jefferson.

Tyler Vanderpool (113), Issac Masserant (132), Ryder Mulherin (138), Vladimir Uhlik (157), Malachi Pribyl (175) and Gabe Hall (190) were second, Joseph Peer (106) and Daniel Allen (120) third and Gary Rice (150) and Daniel Phipps (215) and fourth.

Huron had six champions – Carson Gemmel (113), Daniel Gemmel (120), Jason Downs (132), Braydon Hall (138), Nathan Matsos (150) and Andrew Ladach (157).

“We had 11 placers,” Huron coach Logan Ritchie said. “We wrestled pretty well. We flipped a couple of matches from the dual (against Jefferson). It looks like we’re peaking at the right time.”

Caleb Frazier (106), Daniel Hubbard (165) and Colton Marenette (285) took second for Huron while Austin Bentley (175) was third and Trever Davis (126) fourth.

Kenneth Wingate (106), Jack Mills (175), Isaac Kemp (190) and Holden Otter (215) were champions for Airport.

The Jets had runners-up in Kyle Link (126) and Blake Haliburda (144). Jayden Smith (113) was third and Nicklas Bovair (132) and Tristan Philbeck (285) fourth.

Beau LeBlanc (150) was second to lead Milan, which also got a third from Samir Jomaa (165) and fourths from Jackson Hoover (138), Jonathan Steeb (157) and Eliott Elias (190).

The best finishes for SMCC were Kyle Bashaw (190) and Eric Mathies (215) in third and Brianna Lynch (106) and Philbert Dietrich (165) in fourth.

Nicholas Dropiewski (120) took second for Flat Rock with Wyatt Mack (150) third and Riley Smith (144) and John Lukasik (175) fourth.

PREP WRESTLING

Dundee wins No. 25

HUDSON – Dundee didn’t get much resistance in winning its 25th consecutive Lenawee County Athletic Association championship despite two other state-ranked teams in the field.

The Vikings went 7-0, beating Ida 76-3, Blissfield 72-10, Clinton 65-6, Hillsdale 59-19, Onsted 83-0, Hudson 56-6 and Adrian Madison 63-12.

Cameron Chinavare, JC Amrhein, Blake Cosby and Donny Beaufait were 7-0 for the Vikings, Mason Katschor, Mason Haines, Kole Katschor, Rocco Redmon and Owen Motylinski 6-0, Wyatt Burns 5-0 and Trey Parker 4-0.

Ida also lost to Clinton 77-0, Blissfield 60-23, Adrian Madison 60-23, Hudson 73-6, Hillsdale 52-21 and Onsted 52-29. Chris Galloway went 4-3 for the Blue Streaks.

"We had a few late injuries in the week that cost us," Ida co-coach Bryan Schaffer said.

Bedford dominates

ADRIAN – Cody Duvendack (106), Lucas Gerber (138), Connor Hall (157), Zach Miracle (165) and Chase Norbury (285) all won championships to carry Bedford to the Southeastern Conference championships Saturday.

The Mules had 259.5 points to 174.5 for runner-up Chelsea. Monroe took fourth place with 98.5.

Tristan King (113), Nolan King (126), Dylan Sevilla (132) and Noah Benore (144) were second for the Mules and Vincent Cole (120), Braylon Gilsdorf (150) and Quinn McCloud (175) third.

Myles Myers (150) and Logan Caudill (190) were second for Monroe, Tyrone Evans (132) and Brendon Bacon (144) third and Brock Graves (175) fourth.

Carlson captures title

ALLEN PARK – Gibraltar Carlson finished second in the Downriver League championship meet Saturday, but won the overall league title.

The Marauders won the dual-meet portion of the league schedule.

Zach Taylor (165) won a championship to lead Carlson and Wally Sindone (113), Tyler Kamm (120), Mike Skowronski (126) and Gabrial Lyle (190) were second.

Bennett Szucs (132) took third and Denim Gessner (138) and Michael Shaw (215) fourth.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Mason tops Jefferson

NEWPORT – Zoie Stubleski (14) and Addie Homrich (10) combined for 24 rebounds to lead Erie Mason to a 38-24 victory over Jefferson Saturday.

Stubleski also scored 10 points.

Audrey Trainor scored half of her game-high 14 points in the first quarter to help Mason jump out to an 11-1 lead.

“We are continuing to improve each game,” Mason coach Walt Sweigert said of his 5-8 team. “I am proud of this team and their energy. They work hard in practice and it’s great to see that hard work paying off.”

Sophomore Alivia LeBrun scored a career-high 10 points for Jefferson (4-13).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Jefferson stumbles

GROSSE ILE – Jefferson got all by 10 of its points from three players in a 70-59 loss to Grosse Ile Saturday.

Trey Oldenburg (20), Luke Beaudrie (15) and Trent Allen scored in double figures for the 8-8 Bears.

PREP HOCKEY

Bedford in first place

TOLEDO – Braylon Czarnik scored two goals and Jackson Vallie one as Bedford beat Ann Arbor Huron 3-2 Saturday to move into first place in the Southeastern Conference Red.
