JCPS' board president has resigned. What happens next?
After 13 years serving on the Jefferson County Board of Education, Chairwoman and District 1 Representative Diane Porter announced her resignation Tuesday due to a "chronic illness."
So what happens next?
The board has 60 days to fill Porter's seat, according to Kentucky state statute. The board will solicit applications for two weeks and then vote on which applicant to select.
Applicants must be at least 24 years old, have been a resident of Kentucky for three years and be registered to vote in the district.
The new board member will hold the District 1 seat until 2026, which is when Porter would have been up for reelection. Vice chair Corrie Shull will act as board president for the next two meetings. The board will need to select a new president within that time.
Prior to joining the board, Porter worked within the system for nearly 40 years as a teacher, counselor and school administrator. She retired in 2009, but by the following year she was back to work.
In June 2010, former state Education Commissioner Terry Holliday appointed Porter to serve out the term of former District 1 member Ann Elmore, who had resigned. State law required the commissioner to appoint new board members back then.
Porter was first elected chair of the school board in 2012. District 1 represents the following schools:
