ESPN’s Jay Bilas criticized the ACC’s decision to suspend Buddy Boeheim one game for punching Florida State’s Wyatt Wilkes during Wednesday’s ACC tournament game.

As a result, Boeheim can’t play in Syracuse’s third-round contest against top-seeded Duke on Thursday afternoon. Considering the Orange were considerable longshots before losing their leading scorer, this suspension could mark the end to the senior’s collegiate career.

In a Twitter post shared Wednesday night, Bilas called the suspension “just wrong.” He asserted that it was unfair to retroactively punish Boeheim when officials missed the punch and didn’t call a foul during the game.

“Nobody is saying that what happened was right. It wasn’t. Buddy Boeheim apologized, and that’s great,” Bilas said. “But the ACC should have moved on, and Buddy Boeheim should be playing against Duke. This is the wrong decision made by the ACC. And it’s wrong because it’s not proportionate. It’s disproportional to the offense and it goes against the rules of play.”

Many fans weren’t buying that line of defense.

“Jay Bilas often makes strong, compelling arguments, but here he suggests cheap shots missed by officials should draw no penalty,” one fan wrote. “There must be a postgame option for discipline.”

“Disagree 100%. He’s responsible for his own actions, he ended his own career with them. Yes officials missed it, but you cannot let that go unpunished,” another fan said. “If this isn’t the son of a HOF coach, are we even having this discussion?”

Others simplified the debate.

It’s unfortunate that Boeheim’s Syracuse run may end in ugly fashion. But if this happened in the middle of the season, some may argue the punishment is too lenient.
