Meg 2: The Trench, the new film starring Jason Statham, has been panned in scathing early reviews.

The sequel to the 2018 creature-feature sees Statham reprise his role as Jonas Taylor, with the rescue diver taking on a trio of megalodon sharks.

The film, which has been directed by Ben Wheatley, is gearing up for its release tomorrow (August 4), but has received overall negative press reviews.

A selection of early reviews can be read below:

The Wrap

“Somewhere during the film’s over-long runtime that nears two hours, a character says, ‘This is just some dumb shit. Mark my words,’ in relation to one of the movie’s convoluted machinations. I couldn’t have put it better myself.”

BBC

“Meg 2: The Trench doesn't know what it is, other than a movie sort of like that first movie, but messier.”

IndieWire

“We want very little: again, Jason Statham fighting massive prehistoric sharks, but even that is too much to ask of this tired re-tread.”

Variety

“If you want to know what a movie would sound like were it written entirely by AI, look no further than Meg 2: The Trench.”

Screen International

“Lumbers through the waters, failing as both a gripping thriller and a cheeky 'so bad it’s good’ piece of late-summer escapism.”

Screen Crush

“Brief moments of pleasure are buried at the bottom of an ocean of exposition, dumb plot twists, and incomprehensible underwater action.”

The Hollywood Reporter

“The disappointing news is that the big, dumb fun promised by a terrific trailer only materialises intermittently in a movie that too often struggles to find the balance between suspense and monster-size silliness.”
