Aquaman 2 star Jason Momoa has shared a disappointing update on the future of his DC superhero.

Speaking ahead of the release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, which sees Momoa reprise his role as the titular superhero, the actor revealed to Entertainment Tonight that the future of his character is still undecided.

"I don't necessarily want it to be the end... [but] I don't think it's really, like, a choice," Momoa said of Aquaman's future, adding that the decision ultimately lies with recently-appointed DC bosses James Gunn and Peter Safran.

"The truth of it is, I mean, if the audience loves it, then there's a possibility... But right now, I'm like, 'It's not looking too good.'"

Despite uncertainty over the future of Aquaman in the new DC setup, the actor added that he loves the character and would be happy to play him for a "long time".

Momoa continued: "I kind of see where I would want it to go. And even in the next 10 years or so, like there's a lot of cool things they can do. And I do enjoy the role and the world.

"So, I mean, it just comes down to if people love it."

Momoa first appeared as Arthur Curry/Aquaman in 2017's Justice League, before starring in his own film a year later alongside Patrick Wilson and Amber Heard.

Sequel Aquaman 2 is set to be released later this month and sees Aquaman form an unlikely alliance with his brother Orm (Wilson) to defend the kingdom from Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II).

There's also the possibility of Momoa appearing as a completely new character in future DC films, with Variety reporting that the actor was "engaged in talks" to play bounty hunter Lobo.

Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has a release date of December 21 in the UK and December 22 in the US.
