Last offseason, Jarrett Stidham was considered the quarterback of the future for the New England Patriots. Fast forward a year later, he’s on a crowded depth chart that might not have any room for him.

Stidham received limited reps in 2020, completing 50.0 percent of his passes for 256 yards, two touchdowns and three interceptions. Cam Newton was the starting quarterback for the majority of the season.

Despite already having Newton and Stidham on their depth chart at quarterback, the Patriots decided to select Mac Jones with the 15th overall pick in the first round of this year’s draft.

On Monday, Stidham was asked if the Patriots’ decision to take Jones in the first round has him fired up for training camp.

“Absolutely, it definitely fires me up,” Stidham said, via Patriots’ team site. “Last year, bringing in Cam before training camp, that fired me up to continue to get better and continue to grow as a player, so definitely fired up to be competing against Mac, Hoy and Cam. It’s a great room, so it’s a lot of fun to be in there, but, yeah, definitely fired up to compete against those guys every day.”

Stidham said New England’s decision to draft Jones hasn’t changed his mindset in camp, albeit he’s fired up to compete with the other quarterbacks on the depth chart.

“Drafting Mac hasn’t really changed my approach. I can control what I can control, and that’s how hard I work and how prepared I am. Those things haven’t changed.”

There’s no denying that Stidham has the potential to play quarterback in the NFL at a solid level. However, he hasn’t really put it all together since being drafted in 2019.

New England has a tough decision to make this offseason, as it has four viable options at quarterback.
