Janelle Monáe Floats into the 2024 Met Gala in Nothing but Holographic Sequins and Towering Heels

The actress and musician first attended the event in 2011 and has continued to take avant-garde to the next level with her daring fashion choices

Janelle Monáe is back at the 2024 Met Gala in high style.

The singer and actress, 38, stepped up her Met Gala wardrobe with a skin-revealing gown that channeled this year's dress code and theme, named "The Garden of Time" and “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion" respectively.

Monáe wore a dress made of holographic discs that curved around her body and down the design's mini-train. While the entire number seemed to be created from a see-through fabric, it still featured waist cutouts and a plunging sweetheart neckline for a dose of sexiness. The top of her ensemble also included a 3D appliqué that covered her collarbones.

Towering clear platforms and Reza jewelry tied everything together, as did her side-swept hair, done in collaboration with Olaplex.

Monáe's hairstylist, Nikki Nelms, created a "soft sculpted crop" hairstyle using Olaplex's No.4 Bond Maintenance shampoo and conditioner, then followed up with the No.3 Hair Perfector the day of to give her hair lots of shine. Plus, "we gave her a slight trim for precision. We wanted a really soft sculpted look," Nelm shares in a press release.

Before commanding the red carpet, Monáe chatted with PEOPLE exclusively inside The Mark Hotel about her Met Gala streak (she's been going since 2011). When asked about the advice she'd give to herself before her debut back then, the Hidden Figures actress said this: "To be present. Don't overthink."

The Moonlight actress has become the queen of avant-garde Met Gala looks over the years. Last year, at the 2023 Met Gala, Monáe made a shocking outfit change mid-carpet.

The “I Like That’ singer arrived on the carpet in a large, black-and-white tweed Thom Browne tuxedo suit-dress accessorized with a white leather, quilted cat bag — an homage to Karl Lagerfeld's favorite feline friend, Choupette.

Two men accompanied Monáe on the carpet and stripped her of her oversized tweed jacket to unveil a sheer black tulle pannier dress that she wore over a sequined bikini.

The 2019 Met Gala also saw Monáe in some of her most experimental fashion. She wore a Salvador Dali and Pablo Picasso-inspired dress featuring an exaggerated hip silhouette, eye and lip motifs and a towering hat made of, well, more hats.
