Freaky Friday stars Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have reunited, ahead of the film's highly-anticipated sequel.

In a cheerful post on Instagram, Curtis shared a smiling picture of the duo, captioned: "Too late. YOU GREW UP and SO BEAUTIFULLY! Well, it's Friday, and the strike is over so hopefully, we can switch places again in the near future! @lindsaylohan @disney."

Originally released in 2003, the fantasy comedy follows overworked mother Tess (Curtis) and her teenage daughter Anna (Lohan), whose fractured relationship is put under the microscope when they mysteriously switch bodies.

Adapted from the 1972 Mary Rodgers novel of the same name, the pair are forced to live each other's lives, hilariously adapting to a new way of living.

Since the film's release, rumours of a sequel quickly began to circulate. The Hollywood Reporter has since reported that Freaky Friday 2 is officially in the works, with Elyse Hollander penning the script.

Ahead of the exciting confirmation, Curtis and Lohan spoke of the huge potential for a sequel in a joint interview with The New York Times. 20 years on, the duo have kept in touch, with Lohan commenting on their hopes for a reunion.

"Jamie and I are both open to that, so we're leaving it in the hands that be," she said. "We would only make something that people would absolutely adore."

Curtis additionally revealed that she is still often asked by fans about reviving the movie, saying: "Something really touched a chord. When I came back, I called my friends at Disney and said, 'It feels like there's a movie to be made.'"

Before their body-switching return, Curtis and Lohan have been busy working on other exciting projects. Curtis recently hung up her Halloween hat, following her appearance in 2022's Halloween Ends — while Lohan surprised Mean Girls fans by reuniting with co-stars Amanda Seyfriend and Lacey Chabert for a "fetch" Walmart ad.
