Who is Jamie Dixon, the TCU coach who was accused of improper behavior by a player?

Who is Jamie Dixon, the TCU men’s basketball coach who has been accused by a player of misconduct and racially insensitive comments.

The Horned Frogs head coach gained attention this week when player Eddie Lampkin Jr. left the team prior to the Big 12 tournament and used his Instagram account to post a text exchange between his mother, Vanessa, and coach Dixon.

Dixon did not comment on Wednesday after the team’s practice in Kansas City prior to the Big 12 tournament

At TCU

Has coached the Horned Frogs to a 137-95 record in seven seasons, including five 20-win seasons and two NCAA appearances. The Horned Frogs’ 9-9 Big 12 record this year ties their best mark under Dixon.

Prior to TCU

DIxon coached at Pittsburgh (2003-16 as the head coach; 1999-2003 as an assistant). He has also served as assistant coaches at Hawaii (1998-99, ‘92-94), Northern Arizona (1994-98), UC Santa Barbara (1991-92) and Los Angeles Valley Community College (1989-91).

He had a 328-123 record at Pittsburgh, including 11 NCAA tournament appearances.

College career

Dixon played a TCU from 1984-87 where he helped the Horned Frogs win Southwest Conference titles during his junior and senior years. He led the SWAC in his senior year. Inducted into the TCU Athletic Hall of Fame in 2007, Dixon earned a bachelor’s degree from TCU in finance in 1987. He also earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of California Santa Barbara in 1992.

Pro career

Dixon was picked by the Washington Bullets in the seventh round of the 1987 NBA draft. He was cut during the preseason and never played in the NBA. He went on to play in the Continental Basketball League and also overseas.

Career-ending injury

In 1990, his playing career ended when he ruptured his pancreas while diving for a loose ball. Another player accidentally kneed him, causing the injury. During a three-month hospital stay, he lost 50 pounds.

Personal

According to the TCU athletic website: Dixon is married to the former Jacqueline Corteway. The couple has one son, Jack, and a daughter, Shannon. The son of New York City natives Jim and Marge, Dixon spent much of his childhood in the Bronx. He has two sisters: the late Maggie Dixon, who served as head women’s basketball coach at the United States Military Academy, and Julie Dixon, who is a Los Angeles attorney.
