James McAvoy is set to mark a major career first, with the actor stepping behind the camera to direct his debut feature movie.

The X-Men star will oversee a currently untitled film which tells the true story of Gavin Bain and Billy Boyd, two college friends from Dundee, Scotland, who duped the international music industry in the late '90s by pretending to be an established Californian rap duo called Silibil N’ Brains (via Deadline).

The film will follow Gavin and Billy, who were constantly mocked for having the 'wrong' accents while trying to break into the music industry, as they re-record their music with American accents.

When they show up in London claiming to be a seasoned Californian rap duo who are childhood friends with Eminem, they swiftly secure a record deal, a substantial sum in advances, and even an appearance on MTV.

However, it's not long before the pair's web of lies unravel and it all comes crashing down.

The film, which is based on Bain’s 2010 memoir California Schemin’ (later reprinted as Straight Outta Scotland and adapted into the 2013 documentary The Great Hip Hop Hoax), will begin filming next year. Casting will be announced in due course.

"What these two young men from Dundee attempted beggars belief and I can’t wait to bring this absolutely incredible, and also very Scottish/Californian story to the cinema," McAvoy, who is from Glasgow, Scotland, said in a statement.

"Using Scottish talent behind and in front of the camera is something I’m passionate about and I’m over the moon to be making my directorial debut in my homeland.

"The film will first and foremost be a celebration of the Scottish spirit, but the Silibil N’ Brains duo’s audacious fakery can’t help but appeal to audiences worldwide."
