James Gunn has revealed that Xolo Maridueña will return as Blue Beetle in the upcoming DC Universe.

The director and co-CEO of DC Studios has responded to fans' queries on Instagram Threads, addressing the confusion surrounding continuity within the new media franchise.

Earlier this year it was announced that Blue Beetle will be the first DCU character, though the movie itself wouldn't part of the expanded franchise, which is to be officially kicked off by animated series Creature Commandos early next year.

"Xolo Maridueña will continue playing Blue Beetle in the DCU, as Viola Davis will Amanda Waller, and John Cena will Peacemaker," Gunn wrote on Threads, confirming the stars will reprise their roles at some point in the DCU.

Gunn also said it's "okay to be confused," explaining that "nothing is canon" until Creature Commandos and the hotly-anticipated Superman: Legacy, set to debut in 2025.

"Nothing is canon until Creature Commandos next year - a sort of aperitif to the DCU - and then a deeper dive into the universe with Superman: Legacy after that," Gunn's post read.

"It's a very human drive to want to understand everything all the time, but I think it's okay to be confused on what's happening in the DCU since no one has seen anything from the DCU yet," he continued.

"And, yes, some actors will be playing characters they've played in other stories and some plot points might be consistent with plot points from the dozens of films, shows and animated projects that have come from DC in the past. But nothing is canon until [Creature Commandos and Superman: Legacy]."

Blue Beetle is now available to rent or buy digitally.
