James Cameron has shut down rumours that he's making a movie about OceanGate's Titan submersible tragedy, calling the speculation "offensive".

The director took to Twitter after a story in The Sun claimed he was in talks to make a drama series about the tragedy.

A source claimed to the newspaper: "[Cameron] told the story of the Titanic so compassionately [that] it feels like a natural step for him to take this on. Retracing the steps of those on board the Titan is a massive undertaking, but there would be a lot of time, money and resources dedicated to it."

The Sun also claimed that Matt Damon and Kumail Nanjiani were on the project's "wish list" of stars.

Responding to the story, Cameron wrote on Twitter: "I don't respond to offensive rumors in the media usually, but I need to now. I'm NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be."

Besides being an Oscar-winning director, Cameron is also an expert in deep-sea submersibles. He's made over 30 submersible expeditions to the Titanic's wreckage site in the last 30 years.

Speaking to ABC News about the recent tragedy, Cameron drew comparisons between the Titan and the Titanic disaster.

"I'm struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship, and yet, he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night and many people died as a result, Cameron said.

"For a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded to take place at the same exact site [...] I think is just astonishing. It's really quite surreal."

Cameron isn't working on a project about the Titan submersible, but he is working on the Alita: Battle Angel sequels, which he confirmed last month are in development.

He shared the news during an interview with Forbes, where he explained why he and his wife Suzy were selling their ranch in Gaviota Coast, California.

Cameron revealed that his work on the upcoming Avatar movies and Alita 2 influenced the couple's decision to sell the property.

"I'm working in Wellington and Los Angeles. And on the new Alita: Battle Angel films, I'll be working in Austin, so it just didn't make sense for us [to live there] anymore," he explained.
